Choose a training type, enter the issue date and confirm the validity period. The calculator adds that period to the issue date and reports whether the date is current, inside your reminder window, or expired.
If the actual certificate shows an expiry date, use that printed date instead of a calculated estimate.
WorkSafeBC states that workplace first aid certificates are valid for three years. Lift-truck operators must receive upgrade training at least every three years. For WHMIS, the program must be reviewed at least annually, but that is not the same thing as a one-year worker certificate expiry. The WorkSafeBC fall-protection and confined-space requirements reviewed for this tool require instruction or training but do not establish one universal renewal interval.
A Basic First Aid certificate issued on March 15, 2026 with a three-year validity period produces a calculated renewal date of March 15, 2029. The countdown changes with today's date and with the reminder window you choose.
- CERTA printed expiry date on the actual certificate controls. This calculator is for planning and recordkeeping.
- WHMISAn annual WHMIS program review is not a universal annual certificate expiry. Retraining can be needed when products, hazards, procedures or worker knowledge change.
- LIFTThree years is a maximum interval for lift-truck upgrade training, not permission to wait three years when an incident, performance issue, equipment change or job change calls for earlier training.
- LOCALCourse providers, employers, customers and site policies may set different renewal or refresher requirements. Verify the rule that applies to the worker's actual credential and task.

Common renewal-date questions
Does WHMIS expire every year?
Not as a universal WorkSafeBC certificate. The employer's WHMIS program must be reviewed at least annually, and worker education, training and knowledge need to remain effective. Use your employer or provider's actual refresher rule when entering a validity period.
How often does forklift training need to be renewed?
WorkSafeBC says upgrade training must occur at least every three years. Earlier training may be required after an incident, when performance problems appear, when equipment changes, or when the operator's job changes.
Are B.C. workplace first aid certificates valid for three years?
Yes. WorkSafeBC states that workplace first aid certificates are valid for three years.
What if my certificate has an expiry date printed on it?
Use the printed expiry date. A calculated date is useful for planning, but the credential itself and the applicable employer or regulatory requirements control.
