Subcooling

Quick Technical FAQs
What is the formula for subcooling?

Subcooling = Saturation temperature at high-side pressure − Actual liquid line temperature.

What is the typical subcooling range for standard HVAC systems?

8–12°C (15–20°F) for fixed-orifice systems; 4–8°C (7–15°F) for TXV or electronic expansion valve systems.

Why is subcooling critical for reliability engineering?

It ensures the metering device receives 100% liquid, preventing erratic flow, flash gas, and compressor stress; it also serves as a diagnostic for refrigerant charge accuracy and condenser performance.

Primary Definition & Context

Subcooling is the temperature difference between a liquid refrigerant’s actual temperature and its saturation (condensing) temperature at the current high-side pressure, representing the amount of sensible heat removed after the refrigerant has fully condensed into liquid.

In manufacturing and HVAC systems, subcooling is measured at the liquid line (10 cm before the expansion device inlet) by subtracting the actual liquid line temperature from the condensing temperature derived from high-side pressure. This measurement confirms that pure liquid (no vapor bubbles) reaches the metering device, ensuring optimal pressure drop and system efficiency. Proper subcooling is critical for maintaining condenser performance and preventing compressor damage.

Critical Pitfalls

Overcharging refrigerant: Causes excessive subcooling (>15–20°F), leading to reduced condenser capacity and potential compressor damage from liquid floodback.

Undercharging refrigerant: Results in low or zero subcooling, causing flash gas (vapor bubbles) at the expansion valve, metering device malfunction, and reduced cooling capacity.

Dirty condenser or inadequate airflow: Prevents proper heat rejection, lowering condensing temperature and reducing subcooling, which degrades system efficiency and increases energy consumption.
