Vci Film
VCI film is a corrosion-inhibiting packaging film that protects metal parts from rust, tarnish, and oxidation during storage, transit, and work in progress. It releases volatile corrosion inhibitors into a sealed package, forming a protective molecular layer on exposed metal surfaces, including hard-to-reach crevices and internal voids. It is typically transparent and available in sheeting, rolls, tubes, stretch film, and shrink film formats for industrial packaging.
On the shop floor, VCI film is applied after machining, cleaning, or final inspection to prevent flash rust before assembly or shipment. Wrapped components, engines, tooling, spare parts, and subassemblies move through receiving, staging, kitting, WIP buffers, and outbound packing without oily rust preventives or post-unwrapping cleaning. In warehousing, the same film is used for pallet overwrap, covered racking, and long-term storage of slow-moving inventory. Transparent grades allow barcode, lot, serial, and visual condition checks without opening the package, supporting cycle counts and receiving verification. In raw material tracking, it preserves condition identity of steel, castings, and precision parts in quarantine or FIFO lanes. Some sealed films protect for up to two years, reducing corrosion-related losses, rework, and receiving disputes across WIP, finished goods, and outbound logistics.
Does VCI film replace oil or desiccant?
In many industrial packaging systems, VCI film can replace oil for rust prevention on metal surfaces, but not always for moisture-sensitive assemblies. VCI film protects by inhibitor chemistry, while desiccants reduce humidity; high-risk export packs often use both in severe corrosion environments.
Why is transparency important on the shop floor?
Transparent VCI film allows barcode, lot, serial, and visual condition checks without opening the package. This reduces handling damage and helps inventory personnel verify part identity, count, and surface condition during cycle counts and receiving.
What packaging formats exist?
Industrial sources list VCI film in sheeting, rolls, tubes, stretch film, and shrink film formats. These formats let packaging lines match the film to palletized goods, long bars, large castings, and custom-sized enclosures.
