Eye Strain Prevention for CNC Operators

Purpose

This standard operating procedure establishes a repeatable preventive routine to reduce the incidence of computer vision syndrome (CVS) among CNC operators. By controlling screen luminance, ambient glare, focal distance cycling, and tear-film stability, the protocol aims to sustain operator visual acuity across full shifts — directly reducing setup errors, tool crash risk, and inspector rework caused by misread dimensions.

Scope

Applies to all CNC operators, setup technicians, and quality inspectors who interact with digital control panels (Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Okuma), CAM workstations, or vision inspection monitors for cumulative periods exceeding 2 hours per shift. This procedure covers fixed workstations on the shop floor; remote or office-based CAD stations are excluded.

Safety Precautions
  • LIGHTDo not disable the 20-20-20 timer or override the dark-theme setting — prolonged unbroken screen exposure increases the risk of accommodative spasm and transient myopia.
  • GLARENever operate a CNC control screen without the anti-glare filter installed. Raw reflections from overhead metal halide or LED high-bay lights can cause localized retinal phototoxicity after 15+ minutes of exposure.
  • DRYIf artificial tears cause stinging or persistent redness, discontinue use and report to your supervisor — you may require a preservative-free formulation or an ophthalmology referral.
  • BLUEDo not wear blue-blocking glasses while walking through the shop or operating moving machinery (lathes, mills, robots) — they reduce colour contrast perception needed for hazard detection.

  • Blue-light filtering glasses (min. 40 % blue-violet attenuation, wraparound or clip-on style)
  • Artificial tears — preservative-free, single-use vials (0.4 mL each)
  • Task light with adjustable dimmer (300–500 lumen output, 4000K colour temp)
  • 20-20-20 timer — digital app or physical countdown timer that vibrates or alarms
  • Microfiber screen cleaning cloth (100 % lint-free) — for daily anti-glare filter care

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Set the primary CNC control screen brightness to match ambient shop-floor lighting (aim for 120–140 cd/m²). Use the on-screen luminance slider or OSD menu. If the screen is visibly brighter than the surrounding wall, reduce it in 10 % decrements until the white background feels neutral.
2 Install a matte anti-glare screen protector on every operator station. Press from centre outward to eliminate air bubbles. Confirm no reflection of overhead shop lights is visible when seated at the normal operating position — re-angle the screen if necessary.
3 Configure the CAM interface to use a dark theme (or high-contrast mode) and disable all unnecessary pop-up animations that force rapid focal shifts. Set the font size to at least 12 pt on all code editors and DRO readouts.
4 Position the task light to illuminate the keyboard and workpiece reference sheet without casting glare onto the screen. Point the beam at a 45° angle from the side. Keep ambient overhead lighting at 300–500 lux — measure with a lux meter app at the operator’s eye position.
5 Don blue-light filtering glasses rated for at least 40 % blue-violet attenuation before beginning any screen-based operation lasting longer than 15 minutes. Clean the lenses with the microfiber cloth before each shift to maintain clarity.
6 Set a repeating 20-20-20 timer (every 20 minutes, shift focus to an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds). Use a vibration alarm or buddy system for adherence. During the 20-second break, blink deliberately 5–6 times to re-wet the corneal surface.
7 Apply one drop of preservative-free artificial tears in each eye at the start of shift, then reapply every 2 hours or immediately if burning or dryness is felt. Tilt the head back slightly, pull the lower lid down, and instil one drop into the conjunctival sac — do not touch the dropper tip to the eye.
8 Perform the full 8-step visual reset sequence at every mid-shift break: (1) blink 10 times slowly, (2) rotate eyes clockwise 3x, (3) counter-clockwise 3x, (4) focus on a near object (arm’s length) for 10 seconds, (5) far object (20+ feet) for 10 seconds, (6) repeat near/far cycle 3 times, (7) close eyes and palm them for 60 seconds, (8) stretch neck and shoulders. Total time: 2 minutes.
