Purpose

To ensure the first aid room is clean, stocked, and fully operational at all times. Regular inspections prevent supply shortages, identify expired medical items, and verify that life‑saving equipment (AED, eyewash) is functional. This procedure also satisfies regulatory documentation requirements and demonstrates due diligence during a WorkSafeBC inspection.

Scope

This SOP applies to all industrial first aid rooms and designated first aid stations within [Company Name]. It covers the monthly inspection, cleaning, restocking, and documentation cycle. It does not cover emergency response procedures or advanced medical treatment — only the maintenance of the physical first aid room and its contents. Personnel performing this inspection must hold a valid WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate (or higher).

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves and safety glasses when handling any medical supplies, used sharps containers, or cleaning agents. Avoid skin contact with biohazard waste.
  • LOTOIf the inspection requires opening locked cabinets or moving equipment, ensure no stored energy (e.g., hydraulic beds) can cause injury. All power‑assisted devices must be de‑energized per lockout/tagout.
  • HZDo not mix cleaning chemicals. Use only hospital‑grade disinfectant wipes approved for the surfaces. Ventilate the room during and after cleaning.
  • BIOAssume all used bandages, sharps, and soiled items are infectious. Dispose immediately in designated biohazard containers. Never reach into a sharps container.
Required Tools & Materials
  • First aid room inventory checklist (digital or paper)
  • Disposable nitrile gloves (powder‑free, sizes S–XL)
  • Biohazard waste bags (red, marked) and empty sharps container
  • Hospital‑grade disinfectant wipes
  • Pen, clipboard, camera (for photo documentation)
  • Replacement first aid supplies as needed (see section below)
  • WorkSafeBC OHSR Part 3 reference or printed checklist
  • SafeDesk app (optional, for digital logging)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Don appropriate PPE: nitrile gloves, safety glasses. Notify adjacent workspaces that inspection is in progress.
2 Visually inspect the room exterior and entry: confirm door operates freely, signage is legible, and emergency lighting is functional.
3 Enter room, turn on full lighting, and perform a general cleanliness check. Note any spills, clutter, or pest activity.
4 Inspect the main first aid cabinet or cart. Check expiration dates on all sterile items (bandages, saline, medications). Remove and discard expired items in biohazard waste.
5 Verify quantities of each supply item against the minimum stock list. Restock any missing or low items. Ensure all items are in clean, undamaged packaging.
6 Inspect automated external defibrillator (AED) if present. Check pad expiration, battery status indicator, and overall condition.
7 Inspect eyewash station. Flush for 30 seconds to verify flow and temperature. Confirm it is unobstructed and tagged with monthly inspection date.
8 Check sharps container. Replace if fill level exceeds ¾ full. Ensure it is properly labelled and secured.
9 Wipe down all surfaces (countertops, door handles, light switches) with disinfectant wipes. Sweep floor if necessary.
10 Complete the inspection report: date, inspector name, findings, restock actions, and any follow-up items. Sign and file digitally or in a binder.
