Purpose

To ensure all forklift operators maintain valid certification through timely renewal, refresher training, and competency evaluation, reducing the risk of workplace incidents and regulatory non-compliance. This SOP establishes a clear, auditable process for renewing operator credentials every three years or after any qualifying event (incident, near-miss, or extended absence greater than six months).

Scope

Applies to all forklift operators employed at Ryxen manufacturing and warehouse facilities. Covers renewal for both sit-down counterbalance trucks (Class I–IV) and rough-terrain forklifts (Class VII). Does not apply to initial certification or to pallet jacks. All renewals must be completed within 30 days of the certification expiry date. This SOP does not replace the need for equipment-specific familiarization training.

Safety Precautions

LOTOEnsure forklift is parked on level ground, engine off, key removed, and wheel chocks applied before any pre-start inspection or practical evaluation. Lockout/Tagout must be verified on electric models (battery disconnect).
PPEOperator and evaluator must wear high-visibility safety vest, steel-toed boots, hard hat, and rated gloves at all times during the practical portion. Safety glasses are required when operating near overhead hazards.
SPOTA designated spotter must be present during load handling exercises involving stacking, unloading, or ramp manoeuvres. The spotter maintains a safe distance (minimum 3 m) and uses hand signals agreed upon before the test begins.
RADClearly mark the evaluation area with floor cones and caution tape. Keep all non-essential personnel outside the cone perimeter. Forklift horn must be tested and audible before starting any manoeuvres.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Review operator's current certification expiry date in the training database. Record any incidents, near-misses, or safety observations since the last renewal. If the operator has been absent from forklift duties for more than six consecutive months, flag for full re-certification rather than renewal.

2 Schedule and deliver a 4-hour refresher training session (classroom). Topics must include: forklift stability triangle, load chart reading and capacity calculation, safe refueling/recharging procedures, pedestrian awareness, and any recent regulatory updates (e.g., WorkSafeBC OHS Guidelines).

3 Administer the written knowledge test (minimum 20 questions). Operator must achieve at least 80% to proceed. Review any missed questions immediately to reinforce understanding. If the operator fails, provide remedial training and allow one retake after 48 hours.

4 Conduct a hands-on practical evaluation using the standardized checklist (Ryxen-FORK-201). Evaluate pre-start inspection (fluid levels, tires, horn, brakes, backup alarm), basic manoeuvres (forward/reverse, turning in confined space, precise stopping), stacking/unstacking at various heights, and ramp operation with load.

5 Assess the operator's ability to recognize and correct unsafe conditions: obstructed vision while carrying a load, unstable load placement, or operating near pedestrians. The evaluator must introduce at least two simulated hazards during the test.

6 Upon successful completion, issue a renewed certification card (valid 3 years) and update the training database. Attach signed evaluation forms, test results, and refresher attendance record to the operator's personnel file. If the operator does not pass, document the gaps and schedule re-evaluation within 30 days.

7 Set the next renewal reminder in SafeDesk (or equivalent digital tracker) at 2 years and 9 months from today's date. Include a mandatory 90-day pre‑expiry notification to the operator and their supervisor. Archive the completed renewal records per company retention policy.
