Purpose

To establish a standardized workflow for restriping warehouse aisles and painting safety lines. Clear visual markings reduce collision risks, improve pedestrian and forklift separation, and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Properly marked aisles also enhance inventory organization and emergency evacuation paths.

Scope

This SOP applies to all warehouse floors, loading docks, storage aisles, and pedestrian crossing zones within the facility. It covers surface preparation, layout measurement, masking, paint application using a striper machine, stenciling, drying, and final inspection. This procedure does not cover epoxy coating, reflective marking, or outdoor pavement striping.

Safety Precautions

LOTOLockout/Tagout all heavy machinery (forklifts, pallet jacks, AGVs) in the work zone before starting. Verify zero energy state.
PPEWear safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, high-visibility vest, steel-toed boots, and a respirator if using solvent-based paints. Ensure adequate ventilation.
BARRIERErect physical barriers and warning signs around the painting area. No personnel or equipment shall enter the drying zone until paint is fully cured.
FIREKeep fire extinguishers nearby. Solvent-based paints and cleaning agents are flammable. No smoking or open flames within 15 metres.

Required Tools & Materials

Paint striper machine (manual or ride-on)
Floor paint: yellow (aisle lines), red (hazard zones), white (pedestrian crosswalks)
Tape measure (50 ft), chalk line, and marking chalk
Masking tape (2-inch and 4-inch) and stencils (arrows, stop, caution, fire lane)
Brushes, rollers, and trays for touch‑ups
Industrial broom, floor scrubber, and degreaser cleaner
Safety cones, barricade tape, warning signs
PPE as listed in safety precautions

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Clear and clean area. Remove all pallets, racks, and debris. Sweep and scrub the floor with an industrial degreaser. Ensure the surface is dry and free of oil, dust, or loose paint. Post barriers and warning signs to keep traffic out.

2 Measure and lay out lines. Using the facility layout plan, measure aisle widths (typically 10–12 ft for main aisles). Snap chalk lines along the center of each aisle and along the edges. Verify alignment with existing columns and doors.

3 Mask and stencil. Apply masking tape along the chalk lines for clean edges. Position stencils for directional arrows, pedestrian crosswalks, stop bars, and hazard warnings. Secure stencils with weights or low‑tack tape.

4 Apply paint with striper. Load the paint striper with the appropriate colour (yellow for main aisles, red for hazards, white for pedestrian zones). Run the machine at a steady speed along the masked lines, keeping a consistent distance from the tape. Overlap each pass by 2–3 inches.

5 Stencil markings. After base lines have dried for 30 minutes, apply paint over stencils using a roller or brush. Remove stencils while paint is still wet to prevent smudging. Touch up any bleeding edges with a small brush.

6 Remove masking tape. Carefully peel off all masking tape before the paint fully hardens (within 1 hour of application). Inspect lines for straightness and full coverage. Make minor corrections immediately.

7 Dry and cure. Keep barriers in place for a minimum of 4 hours for foot traffic and 24 hours before forklift traffic. Do not allow vehicles or personnel to cross painted lines until fully cured. Perform a final inspection and document completion in the shift log.
