Purpose

The tool magazine drive belt transmits rotational motion from the index motor to the carousel. Over-tensioning can overload bearings and cause belt fatigue; under-tensioning leads to skipped positions, misindexing, and tool crash events. This SOP ensures the belt is adjusted to the manufacturer’s specified deflection within ±1/32", guaranteeing reliable pick-and-place cycles during automatic tool changes.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC routers equipped with an automatic tool changer (ATC) that uses a toothed timing belt to drive the tool carousel. Typical machine brands include SCM, Biesse, Thermwood, and similar industrial cartesian routers. Operators, maintenance technicians, and quality assurance personnel must follow this SOP. It does not cover replacement of the belt itself (refer to PM‑201 for belt replacement).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out all machine power sources (main disconnect and control cabinet) before removing any guards. Verify zero energy with a voltage tester and attempt a cycle start to confirm no residual energy.
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87+ safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher), and steel-toed boots. When using compressed air for cleaning, add hearing protection (NRR 29+).
  • PINCHThe tool magazine carousel can rotate unexpectedly if the belt is still connected. Keep hands clear of the belt/pulley interface. Use only non-metallic tools near the belt to avoid accidental damage.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Metric hex key set (2.5 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm)
  • Torque wrench (1–20 N·m range) with hex bit adapter
  • Belt tension gauge (Gates B100 or equivalent, or a spring scale with 3/8" deflection stop)
  • Straight edge ruler (6" / 150 mm) and feeler gauge (for deflection measurement)
  • Non-marring pry bar or aluminium drift (for motor re-positioning)
  • Clean lint-free rags and electrical contact cleaner (if cleaning required)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout / Tagout: Turn the main disconnect to OFF and apply a personal lockout device. Open the control cabinet and verify zero voltage using a multimeter. Attempt a machine start cycle to confirm isolation. Attach a tag stating "Machine Belts – Do Not Operate".
2 Remove guard cover: Using a 4 mm hex key, remove the screws securing the tool magazine belt guard. Set aside the guard and inspect the belt for cracks, fraying, or glazing. If damage is found, proceed to belt replacement SOP PM‑201.
3 Loosen motor mount bolts: Use a 6 mm hex key to loosen (do not remove) the four bolts that secure the index motor to its bracket. The motor should slide freely on the slotted mounting holes.
4 Adjust belt tension: Insert a non-marring pry bar between the motor housing and the frame, then gently lever the motor away from the carousel pulley. Apply steady force until the belt deflection at the midpoint between pulleys is exactly 0.25" (6.35 mm) when pressed with a moderate finger force of ~5 N (or use a tension gauge calibrated to the manufacturer's specification, typically 45–55 Hz using a Gates Sonic Tension Meter for a HTD 5M belt). Hold position while tightening two of the motor bolts finger-tight.
5 Torque motor bolts: Tighten all four motor mount bolts in a crossing pattern to the manufacturer’s torque value (usually 8 N·m for M6 bolts, check sticker on bracket). Recheck deflection after torquing – it should remain within ±1/32" of the target.
6 Reinstall guard & test: Reattach the belt guard with the original screws (torque 2 N·m). Remove lockout/tagout devices. Restore power and perform an automatic tool change cycle in MDI mode. Listen for any belt chirp or misalignment and verify that the tool carousel indexes to all stations without hesitation. Run three consecutive tool changes to confirm repeatability.
