Purpose

Provide a standardized method for alignment of the KFL trimmer motor assemblies to prevent scoring of panel surfaces, stepped glue joints, and premature blade failure. Correct alignment is critical for homogenous edgebanding adhesion and machine longevity.

Scope

This procedure applies to all Homag KFL edgebander models equipped with pre-mill and/or finish trimmer stations. It is intended for certified maintenance technicians and lead setup operators working on high-volume panel processing lines.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete electrical and pneumatic lockout/tagout is required. Verify zero energy state before removing any guards.
  • HOTBlades may be hot from recent production. Allow surface temperature to drop below 30°C before handling.
  • PPECut Level 5 gloves, Kevlar sleeves, and Z87 safety glasses with side shields are mandatory during blade handling.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Homag KFL specific trimmer setup fixture (DIN 8941-compliant)
  • Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.01 mm resolution)
  • Torque wrench adaptor (6 N·m to 12 N·m range)
  • Flat and Phillips head screwdrivers (Wiha or equivalent)
  • Non-marring dead blow hammer
  • Denatured alcohol & lint-free wipes for cleaning machine surfaces
  • Replacement trimmer blades (if worn beyond tolerance)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolate & Lockout: Engage electrical disconnect switch located at the main control cabinet. Apply a personal LOTO hasp. Release pneumatic pressure from the trimmer cylinder supply line.
2 Remove Access Guards: Using a T30 Torx driver, remove the upper trimmer guard panel (A17707) and the lower chip collection chute. Place fasteners in a magnetic tray.
3 Verify Motor Mount Integrity: Inspect the pre-mill and finish trimmer motor carriage bolts. Torque check the (4) M10 bolts using a torque wrench—spec 22 N·m. Any play here will cause harmonic oscillation and poor cut quality.
4 Mount the Setup Fixture: Slide the DIN 8941 fixture onto the trimmer motor arbor. Tighten the collet nut by hand only to avoid deflection.
5 Dial in Horizontal Parallelism: Position the dial indicator against the reference face of the fixture. Set the pre-mill and finish trimmer motors to 0.00 mm horizontal offset. Adjust using eccentric cam pins until runout is less than 0.02 mm total indicated reading (TIR).
6 Set Vertical Drop / Overlay: Using a feeler gauge between the fixture and the pressure shoe assembly, set the vertical drop to exactly 0.8 mm for standard HPL/ABS banding. For thick PVC (2mm+), adjust to 1.2 mm using the Z-axis stop bolt.
7 Tighten & Re-Check: Cam-lock the eccentric pins and tighten the carriage bolts to final torque (12 N·m). Re-check parallelism TIR. If TIR exceeds 0.02 mm, repeat Steps 5-7.
8 Reassemble & Verify Cut: Reinstall lower chip chute and upper guard. Remove LOTO. Run a test panel at production speed (8 m/min). Inspect the top and bottom joint lines with a 10x loupe—there should be a < 0.05 mm step. Adjust if necessary.
