Purpose

To verify that hand-held and process humidity meters provide accurate relative humidity (RH) readings by comparing their output to known equilibrium values generated by saturated salt solutions. Accurate humidity measurement is essential for product quality, process control, and environmental monitoring in industrial maintenance, pharmaceutical storage, and critical manufacturing areas.

Scope

This procedure applies to all portable and installed humidity meters used for environmental monitoring in industrial maintenance and reliability programs. It covers the two-point salt slurry method using lithium chloride (LiCl) for low-humidity verification and sodium chloride (NaCl) for high-humidity verification. The procedure is performed in a controlled ambient temperature environment (20–25 °C).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out and tag out all equipment that the meter monitors if removal is required. Verify zero energy state before accessing sensor ports.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and nitrile gloves when handling dry salt powders. Avoid inhalation of LiCl dust — use in a well-ventilated area or under a fume hood.
  • CHEMUse only certified reagent-grade salts. Do not reuse salt slurries; cross‑contamination will invalidate the calibration.

  • Saturated salt standards: lithium chloride (LiCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl) — certified ACS grade or equivalent
  • Two glass jars (500 mL) with vapour‑tight lids
  • Small glass dishes or beakers (50 mL) for salt slurry
  • Distilled water
  • Digital thermometer with ±0.1 °C accuracy
  • Timer (minute resolution)
  • Calibration log sheet (paper or digital)
  • Reference hygrometer (optional, for cross‑check)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare salt solutions. For each salt (LiCl and NaCl), add enough distilled water to create a thick slurry with visible undissolved crystals. Place each slurry in a separate glass dish inside the corresponding jar. Do not exceed 10% of jar volume.
2 Condition the meter. Power on the humidity meter and place it in a stable room environment (22 ±2 °C). Allow 15 minutes for the sensor to reach thermal equilibrium. Record ambient temperature and RH.
3 Low‑point chamber setup (LiCl). Insert the meter sensor through the lid port (or place the entire meter inside the jar if compact). Ensure a tight seal. Place the jar in a vibration‑free area at 25 ±1 °C.
4 Equilibration and reading (LiCl). Wait 45–60 minutes for internal RH to reach equilibrium (theoretical RH: 11.3% at 25 °C). Record the displayed RH and temperature. Compare to reference value.
5 High‑point chamber setup (NaCl). Remove meter, allow it to re‑stabilize for 10 minutes at room conditions. Then repeat steps 3–4 using the NaCl slurry jar (theoretical RH: 75.3% at 25 °C). Record reading.
6 Evaluate results. If both readings are within ±3% RH of the theoretical values, pass. If one point fails, recalibrate per manufacturer instructions. If both fail, replace the meter.
7 Document and sign off. Complete the calibration log: date, meter ID/asset tag, temperature during test, both RH readings, pass/fail, and corrective action (if any). Attach to CMMS record.
8 Clean up. Dispose of salt slurries per local hazardous waste guidelines. Rinse jars and dishes with distilled water. Store salts in sealed containers labeled with date.
