Industrial Parts Washer Solvent Replacement & Sludge Removal
This standard operating procedure defines the mandatory sequence for removing accumulated sludge, replacing spent solvent, and commissioning the industrial parts washer back into service. Adherence ensures optimal cleaning performance, extends equipment life, and mitigates fire and environmental hazards.
To establish a standardized, auditable method for the periodic maintenance of industrial parts washers. The objective is to remove combustible sludge buildup, restore solvent clarity and degreasing efficacy, inspect the pump and filtration system, and ensure all safety interlocks and fire suppression systems are operational before returning the unit to production.
This procedure applies to all solvent-based, manually operated and automated industrial parts washers (e.g., Safety-Kleen, Hotsy, ChemFree) located in the maintenance bay and fabrication shop floor. It covers machines utilizing mineral spirits, Stoddard solvent, or high-flash point hydrocarbon-based cleaning fluids. This does not cover aqueous/water-based washers or vapor degreasers.
- Perform Lockout/Tagout on the electrical disconnect for the washer pump and any conveyor system. Verify zero energy state before proceeding.
- Ensure all ignition sources (pilot lights, open flames, non-rated electrical tools) are removed from the work area. Ambient solvent vapors are highly flammable.
- Wear splash-proof goggles (ANSI Z87.1), nitrile or Viton solvent-resistant gloves, and a chemical-resistant apron. A suitable respirator (organic vapor cartridge) is required if ventilation is inadequate.
- Confirm the local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system is operational and positioned at the washer's vapor level. Maintain a minimum of 8 air changes per hour.
- Place all solvent-soaked rags and filters in an approved, self-closing oily waste container immediately to prevent spontaneous combustion.
- Approved solvent waste drum (55-gallon, UN/DOT rated)
- Fresh solvent supply (manufacturer-specified formulation)
- Non-sparking / polypropylene sludge scoop and scraper
- Gasketed disposal bags for semi-solid sludge
- Filter gasket kit and replacement filter cartridge
- Torque wrench (ft-lb) for lid or access port bolts
- Digital non-contact IR thermometer
- Combustible gas indicator (CGI) calibrated for LEL of applicable solvents
- Lint-free industrial wipes
