Purpose

To establish a standardized, safe, and repeatable method for replacing spent vibratory finishing media and clearing blockages in the bowl drainage system. Adherence to this procedure ensures optimal finishing efficiency, prevents cross-contamination between aluminum and steel parts, extends urethane liner life, and protects the recirculation pump from fines-induced wear or cavitation.

Scope

Applies to all operators and maintenance technicians responsible for vibratory bowl finishers (round bowl, continuous or batch style) utilizing synthetic ceramic or plastic media. Covers media extraction, interior cleaning, drain line augering, and system restart. Excludes troubleshooting of the eccentric drive motor, bearing replacement, or electrical cabinet repairs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOIsolate electrical energy to the main drive motor and slurry recirculation pump per facility zero-energy state procedure. Verify isolation by attempting to start both the drive motor and the pump from the operator panel before reaching into the bowl.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5+), impact-rated safety glasses, and a full-coverage face shield when handling spent media and cleaning solutions. Spent media can contain sharp metal burrs and chemical compound residues.
  • CONFINEDDo not enter the vibratory bowl. Use long-handled tools for media removal. If the bowl depth exceeds 48 inches, the interior must be treated as a confined space per local OHS regulations.
  • SLIPWater/compound mixture creates an extreme slip hazard when draining. Deploy anti-fatigue matting with drainage holes around the work area and wear steel-toed slip-resistant boots.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Media scoop / shovel (316 SS or anti-spark polypropylene)
  • Replacement media (pre-sized ceramic triangles or plastic cones per process spec)
  • Wet/dry vacuum (HEPA rated, 10+ gallon capacity for high-volume fines)
  • Drain auger / snake (1/4" x 25ft minimum)
  • pH-neutral bowl cleaner (biodegradable, non-abrasive)
  • Stiff-bristle scrub brush (nylon or polypropylene)
  • Adjustable wrench or Channel Locks (for drain plug)
  • Lockout/Tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tags, group LOTO box if applicable)
  • 55-gallon waste drum (labeled for spent media disposal)
  • Compressed air line with OSHA-approved blowgun (for cleaning drain screens and separation gates)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Isolation: Shut down the vibratory finisher using the main disconnect switch on the control panel. Lock out the motor starter with a personal padlock. Tag out the recirculation pump breaker. Attempt to start both the drive motor and the pump from the operator panel to verify a zero-energy state. Ensure the bowl has come to a complete stop.
2 Drain Valve Positioning & Waste Capture: Position a 55-gallon waste drum directly under the main drain port. Ensure the drain hose or channel is clear of obstructions upstream. Slowly open the drain valve 1/4 turn to relieve internal pressure, then fully open the valve. Expect a sudden release of compound-laden slurry.
3 Slurry & Fines Evacuation: Allow the liquid compound, water, and micronized metal fines to drain completely into the waste drum. If the flow rate is less than 1 gallon per minute, the drain line is partially obstructed—proceed immediately to Step 4. Do not proceed with media removal until the bowl is fully drained of liquid.
4 Drain Line Auger Clearing: Insert a drain auger into the open drain port. Feed the cable slowly until resistance is met. Rotate the cable clockwise to break through packed sludge or hardened compound. Retract and reinsert in short strokes to clear the line fully. Flush with a 5-gallon bucket of clean water and verify unrestricted flow into the waste drum.
5 Bulk Media Removal (Top Layer): Using the polypropylene scoop, remove the top 60-70% of spent media. Work systematically from the outer edge of the bowl inward toward the center hub. Transfer spent media directly into the waste drums. Do not exceed 50 lbs per lift to comply with manual handling guidelines.
6 Vacuum Evacuation of Residual Media & Fines: Deploy the HEPA-rated wet/dry vacuum to remove the remaining media, metal fines, and sludge from the bowl bottom. Pay special attention to the recessed areas around the drain screen inlet and the separation gate track. Visually confirm the drain screen is clear of media.
7 Bowl Interior Cleaning & Degreasing: Spray the interior surfaces, including the urethane liner, separation gate, and media return chute, with a pH-neutral bowl cleaner. Scrub vigorously with a stiff-bristle brush to remove the compound film and embedded metal fines. Vacuum out all cleaning residue and rinse with fresh water.
8 Component Inspection: Inspect the polyurethane bowl liner for cuts, tears, or delamination. Inspect the drain screen for wear—holes must not exceed 1/8" in diameter. Verify the separation gate springs are intact and that the gate closes flush against the bowl wall. Replace any worn components before proceeding.
9 Load New Media: Fill the bowl with the specified replacement media to 80-95% of the rated bowl capacity. Add water and liquid compound per the process specification sheet for the target part family. Do not exceed the bowl's maximum weight rating. Record the media batch/lot number in the PM log.
10 Leak Test, Restart & Documentation: Close the drain valve, tightening to exactly 1.5 turns past fully closed (over-torquing can strip the drain port threads). Remove all LOTO devices. Restart the machine and run a water-only cycle for 5 minutes. Inspect all drain connections for leaks. Record the media change date, volume of spent media removed (L/kg), and observations of liner/drain condition in the equipment maintenance log.
