Purpose

To establish a standardized, auditable method for the removal of scrap wood and ferrous debris (nails, screws, staples) from designated warehouse zones (A–F). The primary objectives are: (1) eliminate puncture hazards to personnel and equipment (conveyor belts, forklift tires), (2) reduce combustible dust and fire load in accordance with NFPA 654, and (3) ensure compliance with internal housekeeping standards and external regulatory requirements.

Scope

This protocol applies to all warehouse associates, maintenance technicians, and janitorial staff operating within Zones A through F of the main distribution warehouse. It covers the saw/trim station, pallet breakdown area, general storage aisles, and loading bay thresholds. This protocol does not cover chemical spill response or the disposal of hazardous waste (e.g., oily rags, solvent containers).

Safety Precautions

LOTOLockout/Tagout must be verified on any automated sweeping machinery or conveyor systems before debris removal near moving parts.
PPEMandatory wear of ANSI Z41 cut-resistant gloves, steel-toed boots, and Z87.1 safety glasses. Hearing protection required if operating industrial sweepers.
HAZDo not mix oily rags or chemical spills with dry scrap wood. Segregate immediately into designated fire-proof containers to prevent spontaneous combustion.
ERGUse proper lifting mechanics when handling heavy scrap bins. Do not overload containers beyond 50 lbs to avoid musculoskeletal injury.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Pre-Sweep Inspection & Area Isolation: Deploy safety cones around the target zone. Visually inspect the floor for large debris, protruding nails, or tangled strapping. If using a ride-on sweeper, perform a pre-operational check (brakes, brushes, hopper). Verify LOTO on any automated sweepers.

2 Large Debris & Pallet Breakdown: Manually remove all loose lumber, cardboard, and full pallets. Use a pry bar to break down damaged pallets. Immediately pull or bend over any exposed nails using the claw of a hammer or pry bar to prevent puncture wounds.

3 Primary Sweeping: Deploy the industrial push broom. Sweep systematically from the furthest corner of the zone towards the central aisle. Use short, controlled strokes to dislodge embedded dirt and fine sawdust. Pile debris at designated collection points.

4 Ferrous Metal Recovery (Nail Sweeping): Deploy the magnetic sweeper/roller over the entire swept area. Perform overlapping passes (50% overlap). This step is critical to remove nails, screws, and metal shavings that cause forklift tire punctures and conveyor belt damage. Clean the magnetic roller into the red metal scrap bin.

5 Fine Dust & Residue Removal: For areas near saw stations or high dust accumulation, use the HEPA-filtered explosion-proof vacuum to remove fine combustible wood dust from the floor, wall ledges, and equipment surfaces. Do not use compressed air for dust removal per NFPA 654 requirements.

6 Waste Segregation & Disposal: Transport full bins to the designated waste yard. Ensure wood scrap is placed in the "Clean Wood" dumpster. Ferrous metal goes to the recycling bin. Contaminated or painted wood must be bagged and sent to proper waste-to-energy.

7 Final Inspection & Sign-Off: Conduct a visual sweep of the area. Check for any missed debris in corners or under racks. Record the completion time, volume of waste collected, and any equipment issues in the shift log or ServiceGrid.
