Purpose

To establish a standardized method for evaluating the volumetric shrinkage of two-part epoxy and polyester wood fillers used in pattern making, die modeling, and structural repair prior to coating or machining. This procedure ensures repaired surfaces maintain dimensional integrity under thermal and mechanical stress.

Scope

This SOP applies to all high-build wood fillers and body putties utilized in the pattern shop, foundry, and maintenance repair bays. It covers the preparation, casting, measurement, and acceptance/rejection criteria for shrinkage testing of materials applied at depths exceeding 1/4 inch.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout mixing equipment per Plant Standard PS-101 before cleaning or performing setup. Verify zero energy state before reaching into mixing chambers.
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and chemically resistant aprons. Ensure adequate ventilation (LEV) is operating to capture styrene and isocyanate vapours below 20 ppm.
  • HAZIsolate all ignition sources. Ground mixing containers and molds to prevent static discharge when handling volatile solvents, hardeners, and accelerators.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital micrometer (±0.001 in) or calibrated calliper with NIST traceable certificate.
  • Precision-machined aluminum mold cavity (3.0 x 3.0 x 0.5 in).
  • Two-part epoxy wood filler (e.g., Smooth-On EA-40) or polyester filler (e.g., Bondo).
  • Graduated mixing cups, stir sticks, and a gram scale (resolution ±0.1 g).
  • Temperature/humidity data logger with alarm logging capability.
  • Mold release agent (PVA or silicone-based).

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare Mold & Environment: Clean the aluminum mold with acetone and apply a thin, even film of mold release. Ensure ambient temperature is stable at 22±2°C and relative humidity is <60%. Place the data logger directly adjacent to the mold to record conditions throughout the test.
2 Weigh & Mix: Accurately weigh Part A and Part B per manufacturer's specified ratio (e.g., 100:45 by weight). Mix vigorously for exactly 2 minutes using a clean stir stick, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup to ensure a homogenous blend without introducing excessive air.
3 Cast Sample: Pour the mixed filler into the center of the mold in a single steady stream, allowing the material to self-level. Gently vibrate the mold on a flat surface or tap firmly 10-15 times to release entrapped air bubbles. Do not overfill; strike off excess flush with the mold top edge.
4 Initial Cure (Demold): Allow the sample to cure undisturbed for the manufacturer's specified demold time (typically 45-60 min at 22°C). Carefully demold the sample by gently flexing the mold or using compressed air at the parting line.
5 Post-Cure & Measurement Schedule: Place the demolded sample on a clean, non-stick surface. Using the micrometer, record the length, width, and height immediately (t=0). Repeat the full dimensional record at t=1hr, t=4hrs, t=24hrs, and t=48hrs. Log each measurement on the PM data sheet.
6 Calculate Shrinkage: Compute volumetric shrinkage using the formula: [(V_initial - V_final) / V_initial] * 100. Acceptable threshold is <0.5% linear shrinkage (or <1.5% volumetric) per the Engineering standard. Tag and quarantine any batch exceeding these limits for engineering review.
