Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to define the standardized method for achieving and verifying a dust-free interior condition on all cabinet components. Unchecked sawdust, chip-out, loose hardware, or marking residue leads to rework, finish defects, and customer chargebacks. This procedure embeds quality control directly into the production flow, eliminating the need for separate inspection stations.

Scope

This procedure applies to all cabinet carcasses, face frames, drawer boxes, and door panels processed through the CNC nesting cell and manual edgebanding stations. It covers initial debris removal, detailed vacuuming, compressed air blowdown, final wiping, and visual inspection under controlled lighting. It excludes pre-laminated or pre-finished panels that require wet-wipe only (see SOP 404).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout on the centralized dust collection drop-downs and compressed air supply before performing any cleaning or inspection of the ductwork itself. Isolate the machine.
  • PPEWear impact-rated safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1) to protect against airborne dust particles and accidental compressed air debris. Hearing protection required when using pneumatic blowguns exceeding 80 dBA.
  • 5SMaintain a clean workstation free of trip hazards (air hoses, power cords). Use drop-down retractable reels where available. Empty vacuum canister before it reaches 75% capacity.
Required Tools & Materials
  • HEPA-certified mobile vacuum with crevice tool and fine brush attachment
  • Compressed air supply with pneumatic blowgun (regulated to max 30 PSI)
  • Anti-static microfibre cloths (18" x 18", lint-free) and approved tack cloths
  • High-lumen LED inspection light (minimum 1000 lumens)
  • Halogen or natural spectrum overhead task lighting
  • Inspection gloves (cotton or nitrile to prevent finger oils and marking)
  • Green acceptance stickers and red defect tags

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Setup & Isolation: Position the cabinet component or assembled box on the designated clean-out table. Disconnect or isolate dust collection hoses from the main trunk line (verify LOTO if cleaning duct). Connect HEPA vacuum and compressed air.
2 Bulk Debris Removal: Using the HEPA vacuum with crevice tool, systematically remove all visible bulk chips, dust piles, and loose shavings from the cabinet interior, focusing on corners, shelf pin holes, and hinge boring zones.
3 Pneumatic Blowdown: Using the compressed air blowgun (regulated to 30 PSI max), blow out all machined cavities (dowel holes, RTA fitting bores, mounting plates). Direct debris away from operator and towards vacuum intake.
4 Detailed Vacuuming: Switch back to the crevice tool and fine brush attachment. Vacuum all gasket channels, edgebanding seams, and internal joinery. Verify zero visible debris in threaded inserts.
5 Tack Wipe: Fold microfibre cloth into a clean quarter. Wipe all interior surfaces in a consistent top-to-bottom, back-to-front motion. Use tack cloth for the final pass on surfaces destined for clear finish.
6 Visual Inspection: Under high-lumen task lighting, inspect the interior at a 45-degree angle. Check for residual dust or chips, pencil marks or transfer residue, glue squeeze-out, and chipped edges or delamination.
7 Sign-Off & Routing: If the component passes inspection, apply a green acceptance sticker or mark the inspection checklist on the traveler. If it fails, tag it with a red defect tag, specify the defect, and route it to the rework station.
