Finished Good Handling To Avoid Damage

This procedure defines the correct methods for handling, transporting, and storing finished goods after final inspection. It reduces physical damage, eliminates rework caused by improper storage, and ensures lean material flow to the shipping dock. Every operator and warehouse associate must follow these steps to maintain product quality and FIFO integrity.

Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to establish a repeatable, damage‑free workflow for finished goods from final inspection through to storage. By following these steps, the shop floor eliminates chipped edges, crushed packaging, and bent components—common sources of customer returns and internal rework. This SOP supports lean principles by reducing waste (muda) in material handling and keeping value‑added product intact for shipment.

Scope

This SOP applies to all finished goods produced in the fabrication, assembly, and paint departments after they have passed quality inspection. It covers manual and forklift/pallet jack handling, staging, individual pallet unitization, and placement in the warehousing area. Excluded are raw materials, work‑in‑process (WIP), and goods awaiting rework. All operators, material handlers, and warehouse personnel must comply.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear steel‑toed boots, cut‑resistant gloves, and high‑visibility vest at all times in the material handling area. Safety glasses required when cutting shrink wrap or banding.
  • LOTOBefore performing any maintenance on pallet jacks or forklifts—including changing wraps or cleaning forks—complete a Lockout/Tagout procedure per plant LOTO policy.
  • FORKOnly certified forklift operators may transport pallets. Never exceed rated load capacity. Keep forks approximately 6 inches (15 cm) off the ground while traveling.
  • ERGUse mechanical aids for loads exceeding 23 kg (50 lbs). Bend at the knees, keep the load close to your body, and avoid twisting when manually placing items on pallets.

  • Standard 48" x 40" GMA pallet (inspected for damage)
  • Stretch film / shrink wrap dispenser
  • Corner boards / edge protectors (per product fragility)
  • Labels (pre‑printed or blank with handheld printer) and barcode scanner
  • Inspection tags / stickers
  • Safety cutter (retractable blade)
  • Strapping and banding tool (if product requires additional securing)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Final inspection and tagging. Verify that the finished good passes the quality checklist (dimensional, surface finish, functional test if applicable). Affix an inspection tag that includes date, inspector ID, part number, lot number, and quantity. Do not proceed unless tag is signed.
2 Prepare the staging and pallet area. Clear the designated staging zone of debris, oil, or sharp objects. Select a GMA pallet that is free of broken boards, protruding nails, or rot. Place pallet on a level surface with stringers oriented for forklift entry from the narrow side.
3 Build the load. Position the finished good on the pallet with the heaviest item on the bottom. For multiple units per pallet, maintain a consistent stacking pattern (column or interlocked) that prevents shifting. No product should overhang the pallet edges. Use edge protectors on exposed corners.
4 Unitize the load with stretch film. Starting at the base of the pallet, apply stretch film with 300% prestretch. Wrap the base three full revolutions, then work upward at a 30° overlap. Cover the top layer and finish with two tie‑off wraps. For tall loads, apply a mid‑load reinforcement band.
5 Label the pallet. Affix one finished‑good label to the front face and a second label to the right side (in accordance with WMS location conventions). Each label must show part number, quantity, date code, and storage location. Scan both labels into the warehouse management system to confirm placement.
6 Transport to storage location. Position forklift or pallet jack under the pallet with forks fully inserted. Raise the load just enough to clear floor obstructions (approx. 6 inches). Travel at walking speed, with the load tilted back for stability. Avoid sharp turns near racking and pedestrian walkways.
7 Place in the designated rack or floor location. Align pallet squarely on rack beams, ensuring no overhang beyond beam depth. For floor storage (bulk lane), maintain a minimum 12‑inch clearance from walls, columns, and adjacent rows. Spot the pallet straight—do not push or drag to adjust.
8 Document and audit. Update the inventory record with the exact location identifier. Verify that the stored quantity matches the WMS quantity. If any damage is discovered during placement (crushed corner, torn film), reject the pallet and move it to the quarantine area for re‑evaluation.
