Cross Docking Freight Sorting And Staging Sop
This SOP defines the standardized process for unloading inbound freight, sorting parcels and pallets by outbound destination lane, and staging sorted loads for immediate cross-dock transfer. The objective is to minimize handling touches, reduce dwell time to <60 minutes, and eliminate mis-sorts through strict adherence to destination routing codes and load integrity checks.
This SOP establishes a standardized workflow for cross docking operations to ensure that inbound freight is received, sorted, palletized, and staged for outbound loading within a 45-minute cycle time per trailer. Adherence to these steps reduces labour inefficiency, minimizes freight handling damage, and prevents mis-routed shipments by enforcing systematic barcode verification and lane assignment protocols.
Applies to all inbound freight receiving docks, sorting lines, and outbound staging zones within the distribution center. Covers full pallet cross-docking (FPXD) and piece-pick cross-docking (PPXD) operations. Excludes value-added services (VAS), hazardous material handling, and put-away to reserve storage. All personnel assigned to the dock, sortation, or staging areas are bound by this procedure.
- All conveyor systems, dock levelers, and sorting equipment MUST be locked out and tagged out before any jam clearing, maintenance, or manual intervention. Verify zero energy state before entering any automated sortation envelope.
- ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses, Class I Puncture-resistant steel-toed boots, and ANSI 121 Cut Level 5 gloves are mandatory in all active dock and sortation zones. High-visibility safety vests are required when working within 10 feet of any operating lift truck.
- No pedestrian walkways in designated forklift travel paths. Maintain 3-meter clearance around all operating lift equipment. Horns must be sounded at intersections and blind corners. Forklifts must stop completely before raising/lowering loads above 6 feet.
- 6,000 lb Counterbalance Forklift or Stand-up Reach Truck
- Bluetooth/RFID handheld scanner tethered to WMS/LMS
- Destination routing matrix / lane map (printed or digital)
- 48" x 40" GMA spec wooden pallets or slave pallets for rebuilds
- Stretch wrap (hand or machine) for pallet consolidation
- Pallet jacks (2,000 kg capacity, polyurethane wheels) for staging
