Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

Fully cured epoxy adhesive is machinable using standard carbide or diamond-tipped tooling. It is abrasive due to filler content (silica, alumina, or glass microspheres), so tool wear is moderate.

Coolant is not required, but a mist of water or air blast helps clear chips and reduce heat buildup. Avoid high heat (above 150°C) as it can soften the epoxy. For sanding, use 80–220 grit aluminum oxide or silicon carbide paper. For bonding to cured epoxy, abrade surface (80–120 grit) and clean with isopropyl alcohol. Do not use silicone-based mold releases.

For dispensing, use manual or pneumatic caulking guns for cartridges; for bulk, use metering/mixing pumps (1:1 or 2:1 ratio). Static mixers (18–24 elements) are recommended for cartridge systems. Flush dispensing equipment with solvent (acetone or MEK) before epoxy cures.

Quality control checks: Verify mix ratio by weight daily; perform bead test (cure at room temp for 24 hr, check Shore D hardness); conduct lap shear test per ASTM D1002 on representative samples; inspect bond line thickness (target 0.005–0.020 in / 0.13–0.51 mm). For incoming material, check viscosity (Brookfield) and gel time at 25°C. Reject any material with phase separation or off-color (yellowing indicates oxidation).

Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

Store epoxy resin and hardener in a cool, dry area at 15–25°C (59–77°F). Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures above 35°C (95°F) to prevent premature polymerization. Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent moisture ingress and solvent evaporation. Do not store near oxidizers, strong acids, or amines (hardener can react). For racking, use heavy-duty shelving rated for 50 lb/sq ft; place pails on spill containment trays. Rotate stock on a first-expiry-first-out (FEFO) basis. Label each container with receipt date and lot number.

For dual-cartridge systems, store upright to prevent separator leakage. Shelf life is typically 12–24 months; after opening, use within 6 months for best performance. In Canadian winter, allow cold material to warm to room temperature (24–48 hours) before use to avoid condensation and thick viscosity. Dispose of cured epoxy as non-hazardous solid waste; uncured material is hazardous and must be handled per local regulations (e.g., Ontario Regulation 347). Use PPE: nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and ventilation when mixing or dispensing. In case of skin contact, wipe off with dry cloth, then wash with soap and water; do not use solvents.
