Filter Drier

A filter drier is a protective component in HVAC/refrigeration systems installed in the liquid line between the condenser and expansion device. It performs a dual function: physically filtering solid contaminants down to 20–25 microns and chemically adsorbing moisture and acids using a desiccant core, typically molecular sieve, activated alumina, or a blend.

Industrial Context & Application

In shop floor maintenance, filter driers are installed in the liquid line close to the expansion valve to prevent debris from clogging the metering device and ensure dry refrigerant enters. In bi-flow systems like heat pumps, a check valve ensures proper flow direction through the core. Replacement is mandatory whenever the system is opened, using cut-out methods without heat to avoid releasing trapped moisture. Suction line filter driers are used after compressor burnouts, installed near the compressor inlet with attention to pressure drop.

Common Pitfalls & Failures
  • ⚠️Failure to replace after system opening: Leaving an old drier in place allows new contaminants and moisture to bypass protection, leading to expansion valve clogging or compressor wear.
  • ⚠️Improper removal method: Applying heat with a torch to remove an installed drier drives trapped moisture back into the system, causing acid formation and compressor burnout.
  • ⚠️Using incorrect core type: Selecting a core without acid adsorption capability, such as 100% molecular sieve without activated alumina, in systems prone to oil breakdown leads to acidic corrosion of compressor windings and valves.
Technical FAQs
Can a filter drier remove non-condensable gases?

No; filter driers cannot remove non-condensables—only moisture, acids, and particulates.

What is the filtration rating and desiccant blend recommended for HFC systems with acid risk?

20–25 micron filtration with a blend of molecular sieve and activated alumina to adsorb both water and acid.

Why is a bi-flow drier required in heat pumps?

To ensure proper flow direction through the core in both heating and cooling modes via an internal check valve, preventing bypass and maintaining drying/filtration efficiency.
