Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure the glue pot timer consistently dispenses the correct amount of adhesive by either verifying current calibration or restoring it to factory specification. Accurate timing directly affects product adhesion quality, material usage, and cycle time consistency.

Scope

This SOP applies to all production-line glue pots equipped with electronic programmable timers (model XYZ-100 and similar). It covers the annual calibration check or any on-demand verification when an operator reports inconsistent glue bead volumes. This procedure does not cover mechanical timer replacement or PLC-based systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the electrical supply to the glue pot. Verify zero energy with a voltmeter before opening any panels.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and heat-resistant gloves. Glue residue and nozzle may be hot (up to 80 °C). Allow cooling to below 50 °C if handling the glue pot assembly.
  • BURNDo not touch the glue nozzle or heated reservoir during the procedure. Use insulated tools if near heated surfaces.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout. Turn off the glue pot main disconnect, apply a lockout padlock and tag, and test for zero voltage at the timer module terminals using a voltmeter.
2 Access timer module. Remove the control panel cover (usually 4 screws) to reveal the electronic timer. Locate the adjustment potentiometer (often labelled "TIME CAL" or "ADJ").
3 Record current setting. Note the digital display value (if visible) or the potentiometer position. Write the set point (seconds) on the calibration log sheet.
4 Perform test cycle. Re-energize the system only for the test (observe lockout procedure). Initiate a manual dispense cycle and simultaneously start the stopwatch. Measure the time from glue start to end. Repeat 3 times; record each result.
5 Adjust if necessary. If the average measured time deviates more than ±0.5 seconds from the set point, turn the potentiometer clockwise to increase or counter‑clockwise to decrease time. Make small adjustments (¼ turn) and re-test.
6 Final verification. Once the measured time matches the set point within tolerance, run three more cycles to confirm stability. Record final values on the calibration log.
7 Close out. De-energize and lockout again, replace the control panel cover, remove lockout. Restore power. Sign and date the log. Notify the shift supervisor that calibration is complete.
