Stretch Wrapper
A stretch wrapper is a packaging machine that applies stretch film around a palletized load or bundled product to secure, stabilize, and protect it during storage and transport. Industrial units include semi-automatic, automatic PLC-controlled, robotic/mobile, and specialty rotary arm, turntable, horizontal, and vertical ring configurations. Stretch wrapping delivers consistent load containment, higher throughput, lower labor, and reduced damage compared to hand wrapping.
On a manufacturing shop floor, a stretch wrapper is usually placed at the end of a packaging cell, where finished pallets are wrapped before put-away or shipping. In warehousing, it creates load containment so pallets can be moved by forklift, racked, and transported without shifting, toppling, or contamination. Wrapped pallets typically carry labeled, batch-coded, or lot-controlled materials moving through receiving, inspection, put-away, and line-side replenishment; the wrapper does not track inventory, but it enables damage-resistant movement of tracked units. Semi-automatic machines suit lower-volume or mixed-SKU operations; automatic conveyorized systems are used when throughput is high and line integration matters. Robotic/mobile wrappers work where pallet locations vary or fixed equipment would bottleneck a flexible warehouse. The film is pre-stretched and tensioned around the load to maximize holding force while controlling film consumption.
- Under-wrapped pallets causing load shift: Incorrect film tension, wrap pattern, or film grade lets cartons settle or shift during fork movement or transport, leading to crushed product, collapsed corners, and rejected shipments.
- Receiving bottleneck from manual wrapping: Relying on hand wrapping in high-volume lanes spikes labor time and staging congestion; pallets wait unwrapped, delaying put-away or dock dispatch, especially with mixed-SKU loads.
- Film-performance mismatch: Using the wrong film type or machine setting for load weight, profile, or required containment causes film breaks, excessive consumption, or poor unitization; suppliers distinguish hand, machine-grade, and specialty films.
What does a stretch wrapper control besides film application?
It controls wrap cycle variables such as carriage speed, turntable speed, pre-stretch ratio, film overlap, and wrap count, which together determine load containment and material use.
Why use a stretch wrapper instead of hand wrapping?
Machines produce tighter, more consistent wraps with less labor and faster cycle times, and suppliers describe them as improving efficiency and reducing damage and worker strain compared with manual wrapping.
Where does a stretch wrapper fit in an inventory flow process?
It is usually the last stabilization step before finished goods are moved into shipping staging, warehouse storage, or cross-dock transfer, especially for palletized inventory.
