Purpose

To establish a consistent pre-shift and post-break stretching regimen that prepares production workers physically for repetitive tasks, reduces the incidence of strains and sprains, and enhances overall musculoskeletal health. This program aligns with WorkSafeBC ergonomic guidelines for injury prevention.

Scope

This SOP applies to all production associates, assembly line staff, warehouse operators, and material handlers within the facility. The program covers mandatory pre-shift stretching, optional mid-shift refresher sessions, and post-shift cool-down stretches. Supervisors are responsible for leading or monitoring sessions.

Safety Precautions
  • WARMAlways perform a light warm-up (e.g., marching in place) before static stretching. Never stretch cold muscles beyond mild tension.
  • PAINIf any stretch causes sharp or persistent pain, stop immediately and report to the supervisor. Do not force the range of motion.
  • FOOTWear approved non-slip footwear and comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement. Ensure the stretching area is free of tripping hazards.
  • BUDDYStretch in pairs or groups so that workers can spot each other for balance and encourage adherence to the routine.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Company-approved stretching guide poster (mounted in break room and production area)
  • Clean floor space or yoga mat (optional)
  • Timer or wall clock visible to all participants
  • Stretching bands (optional, for assisted hamstring stretches if prescribed)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Neck Rolls — Stand with feet hip-width apart. Slowly roll your head forward, then to the left, back, and right in a controlled circle. Perform 5 rotations in each direction. Keep shoulders relaxed.
2 Shoulder Shrugs & Circles — Lift both shoulders toward your ears, hold for 3 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times. Then roll shoulders forward 10 times and backward 10 times in large, slow arcs.
3 Arm Crosses — Extend your right arm straight across your chest. Use your left hand to gently pull the right arm closer to the chest. Hold 15 seconds, then switch arms. Do not pull on the elbow joint.
4 Trunk Twists — Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, hands on hips. Slowly rotate your torso to the left as far as comfortable, then to the right. Perform 10 repetitions per side, keeping hips stable.
5 Standing Quad Stretch — Balance on your left leg. Bend your right knee and grasp your right ankle. Gently pull the heel toward your glutes. Keep your standing knee slightly bent. Hold 15 seconds, release, and repeat with the left leg. Use a wall or handrail for support if needed.
6 Hamstring Stretch — Place your right heel on a low step or stool. Keeping your back straight and your right knee slightly bent, lean forward from the hips until you feel a gentle stretch down the back of your thigh. Hold 15 seconds, then switch legs.
7 Ankle Rotations — Lift your right foot slightly off the ground. Slowly rotate your ankle clockwise 10 times, then counterclockwise 10 times. Repeat with the left foot. This improves circulation and reduces stiffness for workers who stand for long periods.
8 Deep Breathing & Cool-Down — Stand upright, arms at your sides. Inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 2 seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6. Repeat 5 times. This signals the body to transition into work mode with reduced tension.
