Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to verify that all emergency exit lighting units are capable of operating on battery power for the required duration during a mains power failure. Monthly testing identifies failing batteries, corroded terminals, or defective circuitry before an actual emergency occurs. This SOP helps property managers and facility maintenance teams comply with provincial fire codes and insurance requirements.

Scope

This SOP applies to all permanent emergency exit signs and battery-backed luminaires installed in commercial office buildings, retail spaces, multi‑tenancy facilities, and common areas. It covers both self-contained unit equipment (SCUE) and remote central‑battery systems. The procedure excludes annual full‑duration discharge tests (90‑minute) and is limited to the monthly 30‑second functional test. Personnel performing this test must be familiar with basic electrical safety and lockout/tagout procedures.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO) – De‑energize any branch circuit before opening an electrical enclosure for inspection or repair. Use a voltage tester to confirm zero energy.
  • PPEWear insulated gloves rated for low voltage (CAT II 300V min) and safety glasses with side shields. Avoid wearing conductive jewelry.
  • FALLUse a stable ladder rated for the user weight plus tools. Never stand on the top two rungs or overreach. A second person should spot when working at height.
  • ELECDo not perform tests in wet or damp conditions. Use only dry, insulated tools. If a unit shows signs of water ingress or corrosion, tag it out and report before testing.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Notify Occupants and Prepare Area. Inform building management and occupants of the scheduled test. Clear obstructions around all exit signs and emergency luminaires. Gather all tools and PPE. Verify that the fire alarm panel is in normal condition (no active alarms).
2 Visually Inspect Exit Signs and Fixtures. Walk through every zone. Look for cracked lenses, discoloration, loose mounting screws, insect infestation, or debris blocking light output. Note any physical damage in the log.
3 Initiate Battery Test Mode. Locate the test switch (typically a push‑button or toggle switch on the unit). Press and hold the test switch for 1–2 seconds. The unit should disconnect from AC power and illuminate using battery only. For units without a visible switch, use the breaker test procedure outlined by the manufacturer.
4 Measure Battery Voltage Under Load. While the test is active, set your multimeter to DC voltage (scale 20V). Touch the leads to the battery terminals (observe polarity). Record voltage. Reject units below 85% of nominal battery voltage (e.g., <10.2V for a 12V battery).
5 Verify Illumination Duration and Brightness. Start a timer. For a monthly test, monitor for 30 seconds. The light output must remain steady – no flickering, dimming, or intermittent dropping out. Confirm that the exit lettering is clearly visible from the required approach distance (per local code).
6 Perform Annual Load Transfer Test (if scheduled). If this is a quarterly or annual full‑discharge test (not monthly), continue monitoring for 90 minutes. For the monthly test, proceed to step 7 after the 30‑second check.
7 Reset All Units and Restore Power. Release the test switch. Confirm that the unit automatically switches back to AC power. Observe the charging indicator (usually a green or amber LED) to verify normal charging resumes.
8 Document Results and Flag Failures. Record test date, time, tester name, and each unit’s status (pass / fail / notes). For failed units, attach a visible “DO NOT USE” tag, isolate the circuit if possible, and schedule a replacement or repair within 30 days. Submit the completed log to the building safety officer.
