Compressed Gas Cylinder Handling Securement And Storage
This SOP provides step-by-step instructions for safely handling and storing compressed gas cylinders to prevent accidents and ensure regulatory compliance.
The purpose of this SOP is to establish uniform procedures for the safe handling, securement, and storage of compressed gas cylinders to prevent leaks, physical damage, and injuries associated with sudden gas release or cylinder tip-over.
This procedure applies to all personnel involved in receiving, moving, using, or storing compressed gas cylinders at any Ryxen-affiliated or client industrial facility. It covers cylinders containing oxygen, acetylene, propane, nitrogen, and other compressed gases, excluding cryogenic liquids.
- Before connecting or disconnecting any gas cylinder, ensure the system is depressurized and the valve is closed. Use lockout/tagout procedures if the cylinder is part of a manifold system.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields or a full-face shield, impact-resistant gloves, and steel-toed boots during cylinder handling. For certain gases (e.g., acetylene) use flame-resistant clothing.
- Never use a cylinder as a roller, wedge, or support. Keep cylinders upright at all times and secure with chains or straps.
- Store cylinders in a well-ventilated area, separated by gas type (flammable vs. oxidizer) by at least 20 ft or a 1-hour fire-rated wall. Full and empty cylinders must be stored separately with ‘FULL’ and ‘EMPTY’ tags.
- Compressed gas cylinder(s) with appropriate valve protection cap
- Cylinder cart or hand truck with chain/strap
- Chain, strap, or floor bracket for securement
- Safety tags (FULL/EMPTY) and markers
- Proper regulator for the gas type
- Leak detection solution (soap-and-water spray)
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) as listed above
- Fire extinguisher (rated for gas fires) nearby
