This SOP establishes a mandatory trigger‑discipline protocol for all personnel operating electric staple guns. The primary objective is to eliminate accidental staple discharges that can cause serious puncture wounds, eye injuries, or hand trauma. Secondary goals include reducing staple jams and extending tool life through correct handling and storage.
Applies to all shop‑floor employees, apprentices, and supervisors who use electric staple guns (including pneumatic models) for framing, sheathing, finish work, or packaging. Also covers battery‑powered cordless tackers. Does not apply to manual staple guns or floor‑mounted industrial staplers.
- Wear approved safety glasses with side shields at all times. Use hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs) when operating multiple tools simultaneously. Cut‑resistant gloves recommended for staple‑loading tasks.
- Lockout/Tagout: Disconnect the air supply (for pneumatic) or remove the battery (for cordless) before cleaning, clearing jams, or leaving the workstation. Attach a personal lock if the tool is shared.
- Keep your index finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until the tool is pressed firmly against the work surface. This is the core rule of trigger discipline.
- Never place your free hand behind or near the staple exit point. Use a clamp or trigger‑actuated hold‑down when stapling light‑gauge materials.
- Never attempt to clear a jam while the tool is connected to a power source. Always disconnect first, and use a small punch or pliers — never your fingers — to remove bent staples.
