Lead Acid Battery Acid Spill Neutralization Protocol
A definitive field procedure for safely containing, neutralizing with sodium bicarbonate, and disposing of sulfuric acid electrolyte spills from lead acid batteries, minimizing chemical burns, environmental release, and regulatory liability.
This standard operating procedure defines the only approved method for responding to a lead acid battery electrolyte spill in any Ryxen-affiliated or Rainmaker Ops-serviced industrial facility. The procedure ensures that all personnel follow a repeatable, chemically sound neutralization process using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to bring the pH of the spilled acid within the safe discharge range of 6.0–8.0, preventing chemical burns, environmental contamination, and non-compliance with WorkSafeBC OHS provisions for corrosive substances.
Applies to all indoor and covered outdoor locations where lead acid batteries are charged, stored, or handled — including warehouse charging stations, forklift battery rooms, automotive service bays, and emergency backup power enclosures. This SOP covers spills of any volume of sulfuric acid electrolyte (typically 15–50% H₂SO₄ by weight) from flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel cell batteries. It does not replace a site-specific Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for catastrophic battery rupture or large-volume acid releases exceeding 20 L.
- Lockout/Tagout all charging equipment in the immediate spill zone. Disconnect all batteries from chargers before approaching the spill. Hydrogen gas may be present — no smoking, no open flames, no spark-producing tools within 25 metres.
- Full acid-rated PPE is mandatory: neoprene or nitrile gloves (0.45 mm minimum thickness), chemical splash goggles meeting CSA Z94.3, full-face shield when splashing is possible, rubber acid suit or chemical-resistant apron, and rubber steel-toe boots. No cotton or polyester clothing — sulfuric acid will char organic fabrics on contact.
- If indoors, use explosion-proof ventilation fans to achieve at least 6 air changes per hour. Do not use standard household or industrial fans — hydrogen gas is flammable from 4% to 75% by volume in air.
- A portable eye wash station or sterile saline bottles must be within 10 seconds of the spill zone. If acid contacts eyes, flush continuously for a minimum of 20 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
- If acid contacts skin, remove contaminated clothing immediately and flush the affected area with cool running water for 15 minutes. Do not apply neutralizing agents directly to skin — water flushing only. Seek medical evaluation for any chemical burn larger than 3 cm in diameter.
- Acid-resistant gloves (neoprene or nitrile, 0.45 mm minimum)
- Chemical splash goggles (CSA Z94.3 compliant) + full-face shield
- Rubber acid suit or chemical-resistant apron
- Rubber steel-toe boots
- Spill containment berm or acid-rated absorbent socks
- Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) — minimum 5 kg per medium spill (1–5 L)
- Large plastic bucket (20 L, acid-resistant HDPE or PP)
- Spill response kit with pH test strips (range 0–14, 0.5 resolution)
- Non-sparking plastic scoop and brush
- Heavy-duty plastic bags (6 mil) for waste disposal
