Purpose

To verify that every manual pull station in the facility is fully functional, secure, and capable of initiating a proper alarm sequence as required by fire code. This test ensures that all stations latch, signal the control panel, and reset correctly, and that the annunciation and auxiliary devices operate as intended.

Scope

This SOP applies to all manual fire alarm pull stations installed in the facility, including single-action and double-action types, with or without integral test keys. It does not cover smoke detectors, heat detectors, or manual call points in systems that do not use conventional pull stations. Test frequency shall follow the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and the fire alarm service contract.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Notify all building occupants via PA system or written notice that a fire alarm pull station test is in progress. Instruct them to ignore all local alarm sounds and not to evacuate unless they see actual fire or smoke.

2 At the fire alarm control panel (FACP), silence the audible alarms and place the system into “test” or “walk test” mode if available. Confirm that the FACP is in normal test condition and that no trouble or supervisory conditions are active that could interfere with the test.

3 Locate the first pull station to be tested. Ensure the area around the station is clear, the station is accessible, and the glass (if present) is intact. Visually inspect for damage, loose wiring, or signs of tampering.

4 Using the supplied test key (or, if no test key is provided, by gently pulling the handle per manufacturer instructions), activate the pull station. Do not force the handle; a smooth, deliberate pull to the latched position is sufficient.

5 Immediately confirm that the FACP registers an alarm signal from the activated pull station. Verify the zone or point identification on the panel display and listen for audible annunciation. Record the response time if required by your verification protocol.

6 Reset the pull station by inserting the test key and turning it to the reset position, or by following the manufacturer’s specific reset procedure (e.g., lifting a latch or pressing a release). The handle should fully retract and the station should return to its normal ready state.

7 At the FACP, reset the system to clear the alarm condition. Confirm that the panel returns to normal standby status with no remaining alarm, trouble, or supervisory signals. If the test mode was engaged, leave it active for the duration of the test.

8 Repeat steps 3 through 7 for every pull station scheduled for testing. For stations located in remote or high‑risk areas, maintain radio contact with the panel operator to confirm alarm reception and reset.

9 After all stations have been tested, restore the fire alarm system to normal operating mode. Remove the test mode (if used) and verify that the panel returns to normal standby with no trouble signals. Notify all occupants that the test is complete and the system is fully operational. Complete and sign the SOP documentation sheet, noting each station tested, any anomalies, and the date.
