Flammable Liquid Storage Cabinet Inspection
A systematic 7-step procedure for inspecting flammable liquid storage cabinets to verify structural integrity, proper labeling, vent functionality, spill containment, and grounding compliance. Designed for industrial safety managers and maintenance crews.
To ensure all flammable liquid storage cabinets on site are structurally sound, correctly labeled, properly vented, and free of leaks or combustible clutter. Regular inspections prevent fire escalation, chemical exposure incidents, and non-compliance with provincial fire codes and CSA standards.
Applies to all flammable and combustible liquid storage cabinets in manufacturing plants, warehouses, automotive shops, laboratories, and maintenance areas within the facility. This procedure covers both indoor and outdoor cabinets with capacities up to 450 L (120 US gal). Cabinets storing Class I, II, or IIIA liquids are included. Secondary containment systems and satellite accumulation areas are not within scope.
- Lockout/tagout any equipment that could introduce an ignition source within 3 m of the cabinet before opening doors or handling containers.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields, chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, and flame‑resistant coveralls when opening or inspecting the interior of any flammable storage cabinet.
- Eliminate all ignition sources — no open flames, no spark‑producing tools, and no mobile phones or cameras that are not rated for hazardous locations within 1.5 m of an open cabinet door.
- Ensure the area is well‑ventilated. If you smell vapour or detect a vapour concentration above 10 % LEL using a calibrated combustible gas detector, stop the inspection, evacuate the area, and notify your supervisor immediately.
- LED flashlight (rated for Class I, Div. 2 if available)
- Inspection checklist / clipboard and waterproof pen
- Safety glasses (chemical splash rated) & chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, 15+ mil)
- Spill kit — absorbent pads, loose absorbent, neutralizer, disposal bags
- NFPA 704 / GHS labels and clear over-laminating tape
- Grounding continuity tester (digital multimeter or dedicated ground tester)
- Combustible gas detector (calibrated, bump‑tested within 30 days)
- Camera (intrinsically safe or remote) for photo documentation of deficiencies
