Forklift Mounted Safety Light And Alarm Check
This procedure details the daily operational check for forklift safety lights and audible alarms to ensure operator visibility and pedestrian awareness, compliant with CSA B335 and local regulations.
The purpose of this SOP is to ensure that all forklift mounted safety lights (headlights, taillights, strobe beacons) and audible alarms (backup alarms, horns) are fully functional before the equipment is placed into service. Malfunctioning lights and alarms significantly increase the risk of collision, pedestrian injury, and property damage in the warehouse or yard. This check supports OHS regulations and company zero-incident goals.
This SOP applies to all sit-down counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, and pallet jacks equipped with factory or aftermarket safety lights and audible alarms. It covers daily pre-operation checks and immediate post-failure actions. Trailers and other yard equipment with similar lighting/alarm systems may also follow this procedure.
- The forklift must be turned off, the key removed, and the parking brake engaged before any physical inspection of lights or wiring is performed.
- Safety glasses and high-visibility vest must be worn during inspection. Hearing protection required when testing audible alarms in enclosed areas.
- Ensure the inspection area is free of other traffic and pedestrians. Test alarms only in a safe zone.
- Forklift (or applicable PIT) with battery charged or engine off.
- Inspection checklist / clipboard (or SafeDesk mobile app for digital capture).
- Pen or marker for tagging defective equipment.
- Lockout / Tagout kit if repairs are required.
- Work gloves for handling dirty or broken lenses.
