Hearing Protection Fit Testing

Ensure every operator working in noise hazard zones above 85 dBA has been properly fit-tested for hearing protection devices (HPDs) that provide adequate personal noise attenuation. This procedure reduces the risk of noise-induced hearing loss and maintains compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations.

Purpose

To ensure all personnel who enter designated noise hazard areas (zones exceeding 85 dBA over an 8-hour time-weighted average) are properly fitted with hearing protection devices that achieve a verified personal attenuation rating (PAR) sufficient to reduce exposure to below 85 dBA. Fit testing eliminates the guesswork of nominal NRR values and addresses individual anatomical and insertion technique variables that can render hearing protection ineffective.

Scope

This procedure applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors required to wear hearing protection in noise hazard areas at Ryxen client industrial facilities. Fit testing is mandatory for all new hires, upon assignment to a new noise zone, annually (at minimum), and immediately following any of the following: ear infection, weight change of more than 10 lb, or reported change in hearing ability. This SOP covers foam earplugs, pre-molded earplugs, and custom-molded earplugs — not earmuffs (which are tested separately in accordance with CSA Z94.2).

Safety Precautions
  • ZONEVerify noise hazard zone boundaries before entering. Only authorized personnel who have passed fit testing may enter zones above 85 dBA without additional PPE.
  • INSPInspect HPDs for visible damage, debris, or deformation before each fit test. Discard and replace any earplugs with cuts, tears, or permanent compression marks.
  • HYGWash and dry hands thoroughly before handling earplugs. Use alcohol wipes to sanitize reusable earplugs between users. Do not share foam earplugs — they are single-use only.
  • STOPIf any operator reports pain, discomfort, or a feeling of incomplete seal during fit testing, stop immediately and reassess. Do not allow the operator to enter a noise zone with an uncomfortable or unsealed HPD.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Fit-testing system (e.g., 3M E-A-Rfit Dual-Ear Validation System or equivalent field attenuation estimation system)
  • Assortment of compatible earplugs — at least 3 different models/sizes (foam, pre-molded, and custom if available)
  • Alcohol wipes / sanitizing wipes for reusable HPDs
  • Training mirror for self-guided insertion practice
  • Personal protective equipment: safety glasses, hard hat (if required in the noise zone)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Preparation & Hygiene. Wash and dry hands thoroughly. Inspect earplugs for visible dirt, deformation, or damage. Clean reusable earplugs with an alcohol wipe and allow to air dry before fit testing. Do not proceed if any earplug appears worn or contaminated.
2 Select Appropriate HPDs. Based on the measured noise level in the work zone, select earplugs with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) that provides an exposure level below 85 dBA. Offer at least three different models or sizes of earplugs for the fit test to ensure selection of the optimal fit.
3 Insertion Training. Demonstrate proper insertion technique using the training mirror. For foam earplugs: roll the entire earplug into a tight crease-free cylinder, reach over the head with the opposite hand to pull the pinna upward and outward, insert the earplug deep into the ear canal, and hold until fully expanded. For pre-molded: reach over the head, pull the pinna, and insert while rotating the earplug gently to create an acoustic seal.
4 Fit Test with Verification System. Connect the fit-testing system (e.g., 3M E-A-Rfit) to the on-ear adapters and insert the selected earplug. Run the real-time fit test which measures the Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR) across 7 standard noise spectra. The system automatically calculates if the achieved PAR exceeds the required minimum for the specific noise zone (typically ≥ 15 dB PAR).
5 Adjustments & Retesting. If the fit test fails (PAR below minimum), remove the earplugs, re-inspect for debris or damage, and repeat the insertion procedure. Try a different size or model of earplug if repeated attempts fail. The operator must achieve a passing PAR on both ears before proceeding to the work zone.
6 Documentation & Tagging. Record the fit test result (including PAR values, earplug model/size, date, and operator name) in the SafeDesk safety compliance log. Label the earplug storage case with the operator's name, date of fit test, and the HPD model assigned. Flag for re-testing every 12 months or immediately after a reported change in hearing, ear infection, or weight change exceeding 10 lb.
