Purpose

To establish a strict, repeatable safety protocol for the operation of industrial hot glue guns in assembly applications. This procedure mitigates risks of severe thermal burns, fire ignition, fume exposure, and electrical shock while ensuring consistent bond quality and production efficiency.

Scope

This procedure applies to all operators, setup technicians, and maintenance personnel tasked with using high-temp or low-temp industrial hot glue guns on Assembly Lines A, B, and C. It covers pre-operation inspection, safe startup, production application, jam clearing, emergency shutdown, and end-of-shift storage.

Safety Precautions
  • BURNNozzle temperatures reach 350°F (175°C). Never touch the nozzle or molten adhesive. Wear ANSI A5+ cut-resistant gloves. Allow 15-minute cool-down period before any maintenance or nozzle change.
  • FIREKeep work surface clear of flammable solvents, paper, and packaging. A Class A fire extinguisher must be located within 10 ft (3 m) of the workstation. Never leave a hot gun unattended on a combustible surface.
  • FUMEEnsure overhead fume extraction system is active before gun warm-up. If you smell acrid or solvent-like fumes, stop work immediately and report to supervision. Do not operate in confined spaces without ventilation.
  • SHOCKInspect the power cord and GFCI outlet daily. Do not use if the cord jacket is cracked, cut, or if the ground prong is damaged. Water and hot glue operations do not mix — keep the floor and work surface dry.

  • Nozzle wrench (for jam clearing)

  • Overhead fume extraction system (verified active)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-Operation Inspection: Visually inspect the glue gun housing, power cord, nozzle, and trigger mechanism for cracks, wear, or adhesive buildup. Test the GFCI outlet using the built-in test/reset buttons. Ensure the fume extraction system is drawing air.
2 Warm-Up & Loading: Insert the specified glue stick fully into the chamber. Place the gun on its approved stand. Plug into the GFCI outlet. Set the thermostat dial to the temperature specified for the adhesive formula (typically 300°F–350°F). Allow 5–7 minutes for complete melt.
3 Production Application: Dispense adhesive using smooth, consistent trigger pressure. When pausing between parts, return the gun to the safety stand immediately. Never lay the gun flat on the workbench or production line. Keep the nozzle pointed away from your body and coworkers.
4 Jam Clearing & Emergency Stop: If adhesive flow stops or the trigger becomes stiff, unplug the gun immediately. Allow the nozzle to cool for a minimum of 15 minutes. Use the nozzle wrench to disassemble and clear the blockage. Never use excessive force or sharp tools inside the nozzle.
5 Shutdown & End-of-Shift Storage: Unplug the gun and allow it to cool on the silicone drip tray. Inspect the unit for damage. Place a "DO NOT USE" tag on the plug if any faults were noted. Store the gun in the designated locker with the cord neatly coiled.
