Purpose

This SOP defines the mandatory procedures for pre-use guarding verification and safe operation of the Altendorf sliding table saw. The purpose is to eliminate operator contact with the saw blade, prevent kickback, and ensure compliance with provincial occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., WorkSafeBC, CSA Z432).

Scope

Applies to all operators, setup personnel, and maintenance staff working with Altendorf sliding table saws in production environments. Excludes non-sliding table saws (e.g., manual circular saws, beam saws) and saws not equipped with a riving knife or blade guard.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Machine must be de-energized and locked out before any blade change, guard adjustment, or maintenance. Verify zero energy state with a test start.
  • PPEPersonal Protective Equipment: Wear safety glasses (ANSI Z87+), hearing protection (NRR ≥ 25 dB), steel‑toed boots, and close‑fitting clothing. Do not wear gloves near the blade.
  • KICKKickback Hazard: Ensure the riving knife is properly aligned and the anti‑kickback pawls are functional. Never stand directly in line with the blade. Use featherboards for rip cuts.
  • DUSTDust Control: All dust extraction systems must be connected and operational during cutting to prevent combustible dust accumulation. Verify extraction at the blade guard and under‑table ports.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Altendorf sliding table saw (model‑specific)
  • Push stick / push block
  • Featherboards (minimum two)
  • Blade guard assembly with anti‑kickback pawls
  • Riving knife (thickness matched to blade kerf)
  • Saw blade (sharp, suitable for material being cut)
  • Wrench set for guard adjustments
  • Torque wrench (if manufacturer calls for it)
  • Inspection checklist form (digital or paper)
  • Personal protective equipment (as listed above)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout: Ensure the machine is locked out before any guard inspection or adjustment. Insert padlock on main disconnect and attach personal tag.
2 Inspect Blade Guard: Check that the clear polycarbonate guard is free of cracks, chips, or discoloration. Verify the guard lowers automatically over the blade and returns to rest position when released. Confirm hinge pins are lubricated and not worn.
3 Check Riving Knife: Confirm riving knife is installed, aligned with the blade, and set to the correct height (just below the blade's highest tooth). The gap between knife and blade must not exceed 8 mm. Replace if bent or dull.
4 Verify Anti-Kickback Pawls: Press each pawl downward; they must engage and lock against the riving knife. Replace if teeth are worn, missing, or if spring tension allows free movement. Both pawls must be present and functional.
5 Examine Sliding Table: Ensure the sliding table moves smoothly without binding or excessive play. Lubricate guide rails if necessary using only manufacturer‑recommended lubricant (e.g., Mobil Vactra #2).
6 Test Emergency Stop: Press the mushroom‑head e‑stop; the saw must stop within 10 seconds. Reset by twisting the button. Verify that the restart requires a deliberate action (turn‑to‑reset and then push start).
7 Check Dust Collection: Turn on dust extractor; verify suction at the blade guard hood and under‑table chip chute. Ensure hoses are not blocked or kinked.
8 Operational Setup: After successful checks, remove lockout. Set blade height so the teeth protrude no more than 6–8 mm above the workpiece thickness. Adjust fence parallel to blade within 0.1 mm per 1000 mm.
9 Cut Sequence: Use a push stick for narrow cuts (<100 mm from blade). Keep hands at least 200 mm from the blade path. Never reach over or behind the blade. Use featherboards for ripping, positioned before the blade. For crosscuts, use the sliding table with workpieces firmly against the fence.
10 Post‑Operation: When finished, lower the blade below the table surface. Turn off the saw and lock out before performing any cleaning, dust removal, or blade change. Complete the daily inspection log.
