Purpose

To establish a standardized procedure for the immediate containment, cleanup, and disposal of spilled industrial oils and lubricants. This procedure minimizes environmental impact, prevents slip and fall hazards, reduces fire risk, and ensures compliance with WorkSafeBC and local environmental regulations.

Scope

This SOP covers all areas within the facility where industrial oils and lubricants are stored, handled, or used, including maintenance bays, production floors, turbine rooms, and storage rooms. It applies to all personnel involved in handling these substances, including operators, maintenance staff, and cleanup crews. Excluded are spills of flammable solvents or chemicals not classified as industrial oils or lubricants (refer to relevant SDS and spill response plans).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOBefore approaching any spill, ensure that nearby equipment is locked out and tagged out if there is a risk of mechanical movement, electrical hazard, or unexpected release. Verify zero energy state before entering the containment zone.
  • PPEWear appropriate personal protective equipment: nitrile gloves (or heavy-duty rubber gloves for large spills), safety goggles, and spill-resistant boots. For spills exceeding 20 litres or in confined spaces, use a full-face respirator with organic vapour cartridges (e.g., P100 + OV) and a disposable chemical-resistant suit.

  • Oil‑absorbent pads and booms (universal or oil‑only)
  • Spill containment dike / Snake River
  • Polyethylene disposal bags (6‑mil min) and hazardous waste labels
  • Scraper, stiff brush, and dustpan
  • Floor absorbent granules (e.g., Oil‑Dry, Speedi‑Dri)
  • Hand soap, clean rags, and a degreaser (e.g., Simple Green Pro HD)
  • Hazardous waste container (UN‑approved drum or tote)
  • Spill kit inventory checklist and a copy of the SDS for the specific oil

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Assess and secure the area: Immediately notify all nearby personnel of the spill. Establish a safe perimeter of at least 10 ft (3 m) around the spill using cones, caution tape, or portable barriers. Restrict access to trained cleanup personnel only. If the spill is near floor drains, protect the drain immediately with absorbent booms or a drain cover.
2 Don appropriate PPE: Based on the size of the spill and the hazard rating on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), put on nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and spill‑resistant boots. For spills >20 L or in restricted ventilation areas, also don a full‑face respirator with organic vapour cartridges and a chemical‑resistant suit.
3 Stop the source: If it is safe to do so, stop the leak at its origin: close valves, shut down pumps, right tipped containers, or plug the leaking area using an appropriate sealant or putty. If the container is damaged, overpack it into a larger salvage drum. Use a spill containment dike to isolate the pooling liquid from drains or sensitive equipment.
4 Contain the spill: Deploy oil‑only absorbent booms around the perimeter of the spill to create a circular or rectangular barrier. For large spills (>50 L), place a spill containment dike (e.g., Snare River) around the affected area. Ensure the containment barrier is continuous and tightly sealed to the floor.
5 Apply absorbent materials: Spread oil‑absorbent pads or granular absorbent (Oil‑Dry) over the entire surface of the spill, starting at the outer edges and working inward to prevent spreading. For heavy pools, first apply pads to absorb the bulk liquid, then granules to pick up the sheen. Allow absorbent to fully saturate (typically 2–5 min).
6 Collect and dispose of waste: Using a scraper and stiff brush, gather the saturated absorbent material into a polyethylene bag. Double‑bag if necessary. Seal the bag and attach a hazardous waste label with the contents, date, and generator information. Place the bag in a designated hazardous waste drum. Do not mix with non‑hazardous waste.
7 Decontaminate the area: Clean any residual oil film or tackiness using a degreaser (e.g., Simple Green Pro HD) and clean rags. Scrub the affected floor area thoroughly. If water rinsing is required, collect the rinsate using a wet‑dry vacuum or absorbent pads and dispose of it as hazardous waste. Do not allow wash water to enter drains.
8 Conduct a final inspection: Verify that the area is completely dry, free of slip hazards, and that all used absorbents and contaminated rags have been properly bagged and labelled. Perform a walk‑down of the spill perimeter to ensure no oil has migrated under equipment or into cracks. Complete and sign the spill incident log, including estimated volume, response time, and disposal method.
