Vibration Exposure Monitoring For Sanding Operations

This standard operating procedure defines the methodology for measuring, recording, and controlling hand-arm vibration exposure during industrial sanding operations. It applies to all pneumatic, orbital, belt, and disc sanding tools used in manufacturing, woodworking, and finishing environments. Compliance with WorkSafeBC Part 7 and CSA Z432 is mandatory.

Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish a repeatable, auditable process for monitoring hand-arm vibration exposure on sanding operations. Prolonged exposure to vibration levels above the action value (2.5 m/s² A(8)) increases the risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), including vascular, neurological, and musculoskeletal disorders. This procedure ensures all measurements are taken with calibrated instruments, recorded in a compliant format, and actioned when limits are approached or exceeded.

Scope

This SOP applies to all sanding equipment used in production, maintenance, and finishing operations at Ryxen-partner facilities. It covers pneumatic random orbital sanders, electric belt sanders, disc sanders, and inline finishing tools. All operators, maintenance personnel, and safety coordinators must follow this procedure when conducting vibration monitoring. Excluded from scope are sanding operations using exclusively passive hand tools (e.g., manual sanding blocks) where tool vibration is negligible.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Before attaching or removing any vibration measurement instrumentation, the sanding machine must be locked out using the site-approved LOTOTO procedure. Verify zero energy state before accessing any tool interface.
  • PPEPersonal protective equipment: Operator must wear safety glasses or face shield, hearing protection (minimum NRR 25 dB), cut-resistant gloves, and respiratory protection if particulate levels exceed occupational exposure limits.
  • HAVSHand-Arm Vibration Syndrome awareness: Any operator reporting tingling, numbness, or blanching of fingers must cease sanding activities immediately and report to the safety coordinator. Do not take vibration measurements on an operator with active HAVS symptoms.
  • DUSTCombustible dust hazard: Sanding generates fine particulate that may be combustible. Ensure dust collection system is active and rated for the material being sanded. No open flames or ignition sources within 3 metres of the measurement zone.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Hand-arm vibration meter — tri-axial accelerometer Type 1 per ISO 8041 (e.g., SV100 or equivalent with current calibration certificate)
  • Magnetic mounting base or threaded stud adapter for rigid accelerometer attachment
  • Calibration adapter and test certificate (valid within 12 months)
  • Data logging smartphone or tablet with SafeDesk compliance app installed
  • Manufacturer-rated vibration dampening gloves (ANSI/ISO 10819 rated)
  • ISO 5349-1 compliance checklist (printed or digital)
  • Personal protective equipment kit (safety glasses, hearing protection, respirator)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out the sanding machine and verify zero energy state using the machine-specific LOTOTO procedure. Attach your personal lock and tag to the energy-isolating device. Confirm that the machine cannot be energised while instrumentation is being attached.
2 Select the tri-axial accelerometer and verify the calibration certificate is current (within 12 months). Zero the instrument per manufacturer instructions using the calibration adapter. Record the instrument serial number and calibration date in SafeDesk.
3 Mount the accelerometer rigidly to the sanding surface using the magnetic base or threaded stud. Orient the three axes per ISO 5349-1 guidelines: X (horizontal forward/back), Y (horizontal lateral), Z (vertical). Ensure the mounting is firm and will not resonate during operation.
4 Energize the machine and run at nominal operating speed (e.g., 10,000 RPM for a random orbital sander). Allow the machine to stabilise for 10 seconds before beginning measurement. Record vibration data in all three axes for a minimum of 60 continuous seconds at full load on a representative workpiece.
5 Compute the frequency-weighted root-mean-square acceleration (ahw) for each axis using the instrument’s onboard processor or connected software. The instrument must apply the frequency weighting filters defined in ISO 5349-1 for hand-arm vibration.
6 Compute the daily vibration exposure A(8) using the highest axis ahw value and the actual daily exposure duration. Compare the measured A(8) value to the regulatory action value (2.5 m/s²) and exposure limit (5.0 m/s²) as defined in WorkSafeBC Part 7 and CSA Z432.
7 Log the measurement results in SafeDesk including date, machine ID, operator name, measured ahw values per axis, computed A(8), and any corrective actions taken. Flag any reading above the action value for review by the safety coordinator. If A(8) exceeds 5.0 m/s², the machine must be taken out of service immediately and vibration dampening controls must be implemented before further use.
