Automated Conveyor Sortation Belt Tracking Adjustment
Standardised procedure for correcting belt drift and maintaining proper alignment on powered conveyor sortation systems. Includes lockout/tagout, drift measurement, pulley and roller adjustment, tension verification, and a full-speed run test.
To establish a repeatable, safe method for correcting belt drift on automated conveyor sortation systems used in distribution, parcel, and logistics operations. Proper belt tracking prevents edge fray, reduces unplanned downtime caused by belt damage or jam-ups, and maintains consistent package flow across divert, merge, and incline sections. This procedure ensures all adjustments are made systematically with verified zero-energy state and documented results.
This SOP applies to all belt-driven conveyor sections within automated sortation systems, including straight-bed, incline, decline, and divert sections with belt widths between 24" and 48" (610 mm – 1220 mm). It covers tail pulley primary tracking, snub and return roller fine adjustment, tension verification, and the final run test. This procedure does not cover belt splicing, pulley replacement, or structural alignment of the conveyor frame — those require separate millwright-level SOPs.
- De-energize and lock out all conveyor power sources at the Motor Control Center (MCC) before accessing any moving parts. Attach personal lockout/tagout device and verify zero energy state by attempting a local start command at the VFD or starter bucket. Do not rely solely on remote permissives.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher), and steel-toed boots. Remove all loose jewelry, secure long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing near any pinch points.
- Be aware of belt-to-pulley nip points, idler roller pinch zones, and take-up assembly travel paths. Keep hands, tools, and inspection mirrors clear during jogging operations. Use a spotter when jogging from the VFD local panel.
- If accessing under the conveyor bed or inside a pit, ensure adequate lighting, use a confined space checklist if required by local regulation, and maintain communication with a spotter at all times.
- Hex key set (metric, 3 mm – 10 mm)
- Combination wrench set (metric, 8 mm – 19 mm)
- Belt tracking tool or straightedge, 48" (1220 mm) minimum
- Rubber mallet, 2 lb (0.9 kg)
- Tension gauge — belt frequency tester or deflection gauge
- Pry bar, flat type with protected tips
- Permanent marker and inspection mirror
- Replacement belt splice kit (on standby, if damage is found)
- Personal lockout/tagout kit with padlock and hasp
- Infrared temperature gun (for post-run bearing and pulley check)
