Purpose

To establish the standardized procedure for inspecting, cleaning, and replacing the brush assembly and dust shoe on industrial CNC routers. This ensures optimal chip evacuation, maintains vacuum seal integrity, prevents brush wear-induced spindle bearing contamination, and prolongs the effective service life of the extraction system.

Scope

This SOP applies to all 3-axis and 5-axis CNC routers equipped with a floating dust shoe and bristle brush pack (e.g., SCM, Biesse, Weeke, Morbidelli, and custom-built machines). Industrial maintenance technicians are directly responsible for executing this procedure. Machine operators are responsible for performing daily visual inspections of brush wear and vacuum pressure differentials.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOIsolate machine at main disconnect and verify zero energy state using a CAT III/IV rated voltmeter. Post personal lockout tag before accessing spindle area.
  • PPEANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, hearing protection (if adjacent machines are running), and cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher) when handling worn bristles or metal debris.
  • DUSTWood/ MDF dust may contain respirable crystalline silica. Use N100 or P100 respirators if total particulate concentrations exceed ACGIH TLVs.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of the Z-axis ball screw and linear guides during manual jogging. Use the pendant or MDI mode for all axis movements.
  • DEBRISWorn bristles can embed sharp metal fragments and hardened resin. Wear nitrile gloves underneath cut-resistant gloves to prevent chemical exposure.

  • Replacement brush pack (OEM-specific to machine model and serial number)
  • T-handle hex key set (metric/imperial, as required)
  • Torx T20 driver / flathead screwdriver (2.5mm, 4mm)
  • Shop vacuum with HEPA filter and crevice tool
  • Soft-bristle nylon brush or compressed air gun (regulated to <30 PSI)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.05mm–1.00mm)
  • Digital caliper (0.01mm resolution)
  • Anti-seize compound (nickel-based, high-temp)
  • Parts tray (magnetic or compartmentalized)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Permit & LOTO: Complete a zero-energy isolation permit. Lock out the main disconnect switch. Verify absence of voltage at the control cabinet using a CAT III/IV rated voltmeter. Post lockout tags.
2 Access the Spindle: Manually jog the Z-axis to the service position (~200mm above table). Place a soft-park block (e.g., 100x100x300mm hardwood) directly under the spindle nose for accidental drop prevention.
3 Remove Retaining Mechanism: Loosen the socket head cap screws (typically M6, 10.9 class) securing the dust shoe adapter plate to the spindle carriage. Use a T-handle hex key; retain hardware in parts tray.
4 Extract Dust Shoe Assembly: Gently lower the complete dust shoe assembly onto the service table. Disconnect the vacuum hose clamp (cam-lock or 4-bolt flange) and set the hose aside.
5 Disassemble Brush Retainer: Place the dust shoe face-down on a clean, non-marring surface. Remove the brush retainer screws (often Torx T20 or Phillips) and separate the retainer ring from the dust shoe housing.
6 Inspect & Clean Housing: Inspect the brush channel for packed debris, melted plastic, or embedded foreign objects. Clean thoroughly with the HEPA vacuum and soft nylon brush. Document any housing damage.
7 Measure Brush Pack Wear: Extract the old brush pack. Measure the remaining bristle length using the digital caliper. Compare to the OEM minimum wear threshold (e.g., 12mm new, 6mm minimum replace).
8 Install New Brush Pack: Insert the new brush pack into the clean channel, aligning the split seam to the designated index mark. Ensure bristles are oriented consistently (usually angled away from spindle rotation).
9 Reassemble & Adjust: Reinstall the retainer ring and torque screws evenly (e.g., 2.5 Nm cross-pattern). Install dust shoe assembly onto spindle carriage, adjust Z-axis standoff height using feeler gauge (1–2mm gap between table and bristle tips).
10 Post-Service Verification: Reconnect vacuum hose, remove lockout/tagout, and power up. Run the dust shoe 5 minutes at max RPM (air only, no cutting). Verify chip evacuation flow using a smoke pencil or anemometer at the table slot.
11 Documentation: Record brush pack part number, batch or lot number, and replacement date in the CMMS (ServiceGrid). Update the PM schedule to the next interval (typically 250–500 runtime hours).
