Purpose

To establish a repeatable alignment procedure for the beam saw pusher fence that ensures the fence remains parallel to the saw arbor and square to the blade across the full travel of the pusher. Proper alignment eliminates tapered cuts, reduces blade wear, and extends the service life of linear guide rails and bushings.

Scope

This SOP applies to vertical beam saws (e.g., Schelling, Giben, Biesse, SCM) with pneumatic or servo-driven pusher fences. Covers both initial setup after component replacement and periodic realignment (quarterly PM interval). Does not cover saw blade alignment, arbor runout, or hydraulic system calibration.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete lockout/tagout of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic sources. Verify blade has fully stopped (≥15 second coast-down).
  • PPEWear safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves, and steel-toed boots. Hearing protection required if adjacent machines are operating.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of linear guide rails and fence pivot points during adjustment. Use T‑handle wrenches with extended reach to avoid pinch points.
  • CHIPChip guards must be removed only after LOTO. Sharp edges on guards – handle with care. Clean all swarf before reinstallation.

  • Dial indicator (0.001″ resolution), magnetic base
  • Precision straightedge, 48″ min length
  • Feeler gauge set (0.001–0.030″)
  • Combo square (12″) with machined head
  • 6 mm hex T‑handle wrench (or size per machine manual)
  • Calibration spacer block (reference thickness per OEM)
  • Pneumatic pressure gauge (0–150 psi)
  • Torque wrench (0–60 lb·ft)
  • Clean lint-free rags and isopropyl alcohol
  • Machine-specific maintenance manual (refer to torque values and stop positions)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout & Preparation. Execute full LOTO per plant standard. Measure and record blade coast-down time (must exceed 15 seconds). Remove chip guards and fence covers. Inspect linear guide rails for pitting or weld spatter; clean with isopropyl alcohol.
2 Bed Flatness Check. Place precision straightedge across the machine bed in three positions: front, center, rear. Use feeler gauge to measure gaps. Record any deviation > 0.005″; if present, bed must be shimmed before proceeding.
3 Pusher Fence Parallelism. Mount dial indicator on pusher fence bracket. Zero indicator against the fixed saw arbor fence (reference surface). Manually traverse the pusher at low speed. Record indicator reading at 6 equidistant points. Target: deviation ≤ 0.002″ over full travel.
4 Adjust Parallelism. Loosen the four fence lock bolts (two per side) using 6 mm hex wrench. Adjust eccentric stops on both linear guide carriages until dial indicator reads within tolerance. Tighten lock bolts to 45 lb·ft. Re-check; repeat if necessary.
5 Check Squareness to Blade. Place combo square against the saw blade body (not teeth). Measure gap between square head and fence at top and bottom of blade. Gap must be ≤ 0.003″. Adjust fence pivot bolts (front and rear) to achieve squareness. Re-tighten.
6 Calibrate Pin Pressure. Insert calibration spacer block under the pusher fence. Rotate the eccentric cam to apply 0.000″ – 0.002″ clearance (feeler gauge check). Lock jam nut. Verify pneumatic pressure at gauge matches OEM spec (typically 85–90 psi).
7 Functional Test. Remove LOTO, reinstall guards, and run three test cuts on scrap panels. Measure each cut diagonally from corner to corner; deviation must not exceed ±0.008″ per 48″. If out of spec, repeat steps 3–6.
8 Document & Close. Record all measurements in the PM log (dial indicator readings, squareness gaps, pin pressure, final torque). Tag machine as “Ready for Production” with date and technician initials. Dispose of rags in metal waste bin.
