Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil And Filter Change Procedure
Ensure reliable operation and longevity of stationary heavy-duty diesel engines by performing systematic lubrication oil, full-flow filter, and bypass filter replacement. This SOP prevents abrasive wear, removes accumulated soot and acids, and maintains OEM warranty requirements.
The primary goal of this procedure is to maintain lubrication oil cleanliness and viscosity within OEM specifications for heavy-duty diesel engines. Periodic oil and filter changes remove abrasive particulate, combustion byproducts (soot, acids), and prevent oil breakdown due to thermal stress. This directly reduces cylinder liner wear, turbocharger bearing failure, and extends engine service life between overhauls. It also provides an opportunity to inspect drain plugs and filter elements for early signs of mechanical distress, such as metallic debris or coolant ingress.
This procedure applies to all industrial stationary heavy-duty diesel engines (151 kW to 1500 kW) commonly used for power generation, fire pump drives, and natural gas compression. It specifically covers Caterpillar 3500/C175 series, Cummins QSK series, MTU Series 4000, and equivalent engines equipped with replaceable spin-on or cartridge style full-flow and bypass oil filtration systems. This SOP does not cover engines with automatic oil change systems or engines equipped with centrifuge filtration.
- Perform Lockout/Tagout on engine starter battery disconnect or air start valve. Verify zero cranking energy before opening any engine covers or drain points. Never rely on a remote start disable alone.
- Wear nitrile gloves (9 mil minimum), safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), and flame-retardant coveralls. Hot oil can exceed 95°C and cause severe thermal burns.
- Position a drip tray beneath the oil filter housing and drain plug. Stage oil-dry absorbent (e.g., SpillTech or equivalent) within arm's reach. No oil shall contact the floor or enter any drain.
- Allow engine coolant temperature to drop below 60°C before draining oil. This prevents thermal shock to the system and reduces the risk of steam/ hot oil splashing.
- Collect all waste oil and used filters in clearly labeled hazardous waste drums. Never mix used oil with coolants, solvents, or other wastes. Follow local regulations (e.g., BC Used Oil Management Association).
- OEM-approved engine oil meeting API CJ-4 or CK-4 specification in the correct SAE viscosity grade (e.g., 15W-40, 10W-30)
- OEM full-flow oil filter cartridge or spin-on filter (cross-reference part number)
- OEM bypass oil filter element (if equipped)
- Strap wrench or filter cap socket (e.g., 4-1/2" or 6" for common spin-ons)
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (Nm range) with appropriate socket for drain plug
- Oil drain pan with capacity greater than engine sump + filter volume (minimum 20 gallons)
- Funnel with flexible extension hose
- Nitrile gloves, safety glasses, oil-dry absorbent pads
- Permanent marker and "Change Date" service sticker
