Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to provide a standardized method for inspecting, adjusting, and tensioning belt drives on HVAC air handling unit (AHU) fans. Proper belt tension and pulley alignment extend belt life, reduce vibration, minimize energy loss, and prevent unexpected fan failure.

Scope

This procedure applies to all building HVAC air handling units with V-belt drives, including supply and return fans, located in commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities. It covers both new belt installations and periodic maintenance adjustments. Excluded are direct-drive fans and units with variable frequency drives (VFD) only.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO) the AHU disconnect at the motor control center (MCC) before any access. Verify zero energy with a voltmeter.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and hearing protection. Use a respirator if dust or debris is present.
  • BELTNever attempt to tension or adjust belts while the drive is rotating. Beware of pinch points near pulleys and moving parts.
  • ELECEnsure all guards are replaced and secured before re-energizing the unit. Follow arc-flash boundary requirements if applicable.

  • Belt tension gauge (e.g., Gates Sonic Tension Meter or mechanical deflection gauge)
  • Alignment straightedge or laser alignment tool
  • Wrench set (adjustable and socket) for motor base and pulley bolts
  • Pry bar or lever for motor adjustment
  • Torque wrench (if manufacturer specified)
  • Replacement V-belts (if condition warrants)
  • Cleaning cloth, safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, hearing protection

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Preparation and Isolation – Lockout/Tagout the AHU disconnect at the motor control center (MCC). Verify zero energy with a voltmeter. Place warning tags.
2 Remove Belt Guard – Remove the guard and inspect it for damage. Clean debris from the pulley area using a cloth. Keep all fasteners.
3 Inspect Belt Condition – Visually examine the belt(s) for cracks, glazing, fraying, or oil contamination. Check for an even wear pattern. Record condition in log.
4 Measure Belt Deflection – Place the tension gauge at the center of the belt span. Apply the force specified by the manufacturer (usually 0.5–1% of belt length deflection). Record reading.
5 Adjust Belt Tension – Loosen the motor base bolts. Use the turnbuckle or jacking screws to move the motor until the deflection matches the manufacturer specification. Do not overtighten.
6 Align Pulleys – Place a straightedge across the face of both pulleys (driver and driven). The straightedge should contact all four points. Adjust motor position until alignment is within 0.5 mm total deviation.
7 Torque Hardware – Tighten all motor base and pulley bolts to the torque specified by the equipment manufacturer (use torque wrench if available). Re-check alignment after tightening.
8 Reinstall Guard – Reinstall the belt guard and secure all fasteners. Verify no interference with rotating parts. Remove all tools and debris from the area.
9 Remove LOTO and Test Run – Remove LOTO devices, re-energize the AHU. Run the fan for 10 minutes. Listen for squeal, excessive vibration, or rubbing noises. Monitor belt tracking.
10 Documentation – Record the final tension reading, alignment check, belt condition, date, and technician initials in the preventive maintenance log or CMMS.
