CNC Router Automatic Lubrication System Check And Refill

This document defines the standard procedure for inspecting, topping off, and verifying the automatic lubrication system on a CNC router. Proper lubrication extends spindle life, maintains accuracy, and prevents premature wear on linear guides and ball screws.

Purpose

To ensure the CNC router’s automatic lubrication system delivers clean, correctly‑rated oil to all critical friction points—linear rails, ball screws, spindle bearings, and rack‑and‑pinion drives—at the proper interval and volume. Performing this check and refill weekly (or per manufacturer’s recommendation) prevents unplanned downtime, maintains positioning accuracy, and avoids costly repairs caused by dry running.

Scope

This procedure applies to all gantry‑style CNC routers equipped with an automated centralized lubrication system (e.g., Bijur, SKF, or equivalent). It covers reservoir inspection, oil refill, line integrity check, and system activation testing. It does not cover spindle oil changes or gearbox lubrication—those require separate, dedicated SOPs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the router main disconnect before opening any lubrication access panels. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Lubrication oil can cause skin irritation; avoid prolonged contact. Oil spills create a slip hazard—clean immediately.
  • HOTAllow the machine to cool for 15 minutes after last run before checking oil level. Hot surfaces near the spindle may cause burns.
  • CHEMOnly use the oil grade specified in the machine manual (typically ISO VG 68 or 100). Do not mix lubricant types or brands.

  • Appropriate CNC router lubrication oil (ISO VG 68 or as specified by machine manufacturer)

  • Flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Oil filter funnel (stainless steel mesh, 125 micron)
  • Pressure gauge (0–100 psi), if machine lubrication pump is equipped with test port

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolate the CNC router using lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure. Confirm all moving parts are stationary and electrical power is disconnected. Attach a danger tag clearly stating “Lubrication service in progress – Do not operate”.
2 Locate the automatic lubrication reservoir (typically a translucent plastic tank mounted on the gantry or rear frame). Visually inspect oil level; if below the MIN line, proceed to refill. Record current level in maintenance log.
3 Wipe the reservoir cap and surrounding area with a lint‑free wipe to prevent contamination from entering the oil. Open the cap slowly to release any vacuum.
4 Insert a clean oil funnel into the filler neck. Add the recommended oil grade (e.g., ISO VG 68) until the level reaches the midpoint between MIN and MAX marks. Do not overfill—allow room for thermal expansion. Replace and tighten the cap.
5 Inspect all lubrication supply lines from the pump to the distribution blocks and wiper blocks. Look for cracks, kinks, loose push‑to‑connect fittings, or signs of oil weeping. Repair or replace any damaged components immediately.
6 If the pump has a manual test button, press and hold it for 5‑10 seconds to prime the system. Observe each lube point: oil should weep from every wiper block, ball nut, and spindle bearing. If a point remains dry, check for a clogged line or failed distribution fitting.
7 Re‑energize the machine. Run a slow manual jog through full X/Y/Z travel. Listen for abnormal squeaking or binding. Verify no leaks present. Record oil consumption (level change), system pressure (if gauge is installed), and any notes in the daily maintenance log.
