Purpose

The drawbar clamping force directly affects tool retention and runout at the spindle interface. Insufficient force can lead to tool pull‑out during heavy roughing, tool deflection, and catastrophic spindle collisions. This SOP provides a repeatable method to measure drawbar force so maintenance teams can detect worn Belleville springs, hydraulic preload drift, or actuator issues before they cause scrap or damage.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC machining centres, routers, and mill‑turn machines equipped with HSK-A, HSK-E, BT (40/50), CAT (40/50), or similar hollow‑shank/v‑flange tooling interfaces. It covers initial commissioning verification, periodic PM checks (every 500 spindle hours or 6 months, whichever comes first), and after any repair or replacement of drawbar components.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the machine's main disconnect and verify zero energy state before removing any guards or reaching into the spindle work zone.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut‑resistant gloves when handling steel adaptors. The gauge drawbar interface may generate sharp edges.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Drawbar force gauge (e.g. Haimer FK‑type, Schunk True‑Pull, or generic thrust‑force gauge with digital readout, ±2% accuracy)
  • Clamping‑force adaptor matching the machine’s tooling taper and pull‑stud (CAT40/50, BT40/50, HSK63A, HSK100)
  • Lint‑free wiping cloth & isopropyl alcohol or industrial degreaser
  • Digital torque wrench (for reference only, if gauge mounting requires threaded adaptor)
  • Machine manual / OEM specification sheet for acceptable force range
  • Data recording sheet or CMMS terminal (ServiceGrid recommended for digital logging)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Perform lockout/tagout on the CNC machine. Isolate spindle power and air supply. Wait 60 seconds for stored pneumatic energy to dissipate.
2 Remove the current tool holder from the spindle taper. Clean the spindle nose, taper bore, and gauge adaptor with lint‑free cloth and degreaser. No oil, chips, or coolant residue.
3 Assemble the clamping‑force adaptor to the drawbar force gauge per the gauge manufacturer’s torque settings. Verify that the adaptor pull‑stud matches the machine’s retention knob style.
4 Insert the assembled gauge & adaptor into the spindle taper until the drawbar fully engages. Manually actuate the drawbar (foot pedal, M-code, or pushbutton) to close the collet.
5 Read the force value from the gauge digital display. Record the peak force reading (kN) for three successive pulls. Calculate the average and note any variation greater than 1.5 kN between readings.
6 Compare the average drawbar force to the OEM specification (e.g. for CAT40: 12–18 kN; BT40: 14–20 kN; HSK63A: 18–25 kN). If within range, log the reading in ServiceGrid.
7 If force is below the lower limit, inspect Belleville washers for fatigue, check hydraulic actuator preload, and verify air pressure. Replace or service components, then retest. Document the corrective action.
