Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to establish a consistent and safe method for conducting visual inspections of high voltage transformers and associated equipment in commercial building transformer rooms. Routine visual inspections identify potential hazards — leaks, overheating, contamination, corrosion — before they lead to equipment failure or safety incidents, thereby extending transformer life and ensuring supply reliability.

Scope

This procedure applies to all high voltage transformers (primary voltage above 600 V) located in commercial building transformer rooms, including dry‑type, oil‑filled, and cast resin transformers. Scope includes inspection of the transformer itself, primary and secondary connections, grounding system, cooling equipment, and the room environment. This procedure does not cover electrical testing (e.g., insulation resistance, turns ratio) nor internal inspections that require de‑energization and clearance — those are covered under separate SOPs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOVerify the transformer is de‑energized and locked out/tagged out before entering the transformer room. Only qualified electrical workers shall perform the inspection.
  • PPEWear arc‑flash rated clothing (minimum CAT 2), safety glasses, hard hat, insulated gloves (rated for line voltage), and voltage‑rated footwear. Remove all conductive jewelry.
  • BOUNDMaintain approach boundaries per CSA Z462 or NFPA 70E; use rubber matting when working near exposed energized parts. Post warning signs at all entrances.
  • VENTConfirm that the room ventilation is operational and that no combustible materials are present. If an oil‑filled transformer is involved, have a spill containment kit accessible.

1 Pre‑Inspection Preparation — Obtain the transformer maintenance history, review previous inspection reports, and confirm that the work order is authorized. Ensure all required PPE is donned correctly. Perform a site‑specific hazard assessment.
2 Entry and Environment Check — Enter the transformer room after verifying LOTO status. Assess room conditions: ventilation fans running, ambient temperature within normal range (typically 40°C max), no water leaks or standing water, clear access paths. Check for signs of pests or rodents.
3 External Visual Inspection of Transformer — Inspect the transformer enclosure for cracks, rust, or damage. For oil‑filled transformers, check for oil leaks at gaskets, bushings, and radiator fins. Check oil level in conservator tank (if present). For dry‑type transformers, inspect for dust accumulation on windings and core; remove with compressed air or vacuum if needed.
4 Inspection of Connections and Bushings — Examine primary and secondary bushings for cracks, flashover marks, or discoloration. Check all bolted connections for signs of overheating (discoloration, melting) using an infrared thermometer. Tighten any loose connections following torque specifications. Inspect cable terminations for insulation damage.
5 Grounding and Bonding Check — Verify that the transformer tank and neutral are solidly grounded. Inspect ground connections for corrosion or looseness. Use a multimeter to measure ground resistance if required (reference value per local code: typically <1 ohm for fault ground).
