Facility Overhead Coiling Door Drop Test And Spring Tension Check
This standard operating procedure governs the monthly drop test and quarterly spring tension verification for commercial overhead coiling doors. Compliance ensures operational safety, prevents catastrophic spring failure, and validates automatic reversal mechanisms.
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized procedure for performing a drop test and verifying the spring tension of facility overhead coiling doors. This ensures that the door's safety reversal mechanism functions correctly, the spring system is within operational tolerances, and the door does not pose a risk to personnel or equipment. Adherence to this procedure mitigates the risk of catastrophic spring failure, uncontrolled door descent, and entrapment.
This SOP applies to all commercial and industrial overhead coiling doors equipped with torsion spring assemblies and electric or chain-hoist operators within the facility. It covers the monthly drop test procedure, quarterly spring tension measurement, and the criteria for accepting or rejecting door performance. Technicians performing this procedure must be trained and authorized in accordance with facility safety guidelines.
- Lockout/Tagout: Disconnect and lockout all electrical power to the door operator at the breaker panel. Verify zero energy state before accessing the door mechanism or spring assembly.
- Spring Tension Hazard: The torsion spring assembly is under extreme tension (up to 12,000 inch-lbs). Do not attempt to adjust, loosen, or remove spring hardware unless specifically trained and using certified winding tools. Always stand to the side of the winding cone.
- Pinch Points: Keep hands, loose clothing, and all tools clear of the drum, cables, brackets, and section joints during cycling. Use a remote lanyard or hold-to-run pendant for the drop test.
- Drop Zone: Ensure the area beneath the door is completely clear of personnel, forklifts, and inventory before initiating any drop test or operational cycle. Install temporary barricades if necessary.
- Certified spring winding bars (matching winding cone size)
- Drop test kit (or contact tachometer + 6 ft tape measure)
- Torque wrench (ft-lbs) with appropriate socket
- Cable tension gauge
- Non-contact infrared thermometer
- Operator manual for the specific door model
- Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, danger tag)
