Plasma Cutter Consumable Inspection And Replacement
Standard operating procedure for inspecting and replacing plasma torch consumables (electrodes, nozzles, shields, swirl rings) to ensure optimal cut quality, prevent unplanned downtime, and maximize consumable life.
To ensure optimal cut quality, prevent preventable downtime, and maximize consumable life by standardizing the inspection and replacement cycle of torch consumables (electrodes, nozzles, shields, swirl rings).
Applies to all Hypertherm and equivalent plasma cutting systems (e.g., Powermax 45/85/105) used in the fabrication department. This SOP is mandatory for all operators and maintenance technicians.
- Perform Lockout/Tagout on the plasma power supply and depressurize the compressed air/gas line. Verify zero energy state before proceeding.
- Wear welding helmet (shade 5), heavy leather welding gloves, flame-resistant long-sleeve shirt, and safety glasses with side shields.
- Allow torch head to cool for a minimum of 5 minutes after operation to prevent severe burns.
- Used electrodes contain trace amounts of thorium/hafnium. Handle according to SDS and dispose of in designated hazardous waste container.
- Replacement consumable kit (electrode, nozzle, shield, swirl ring, retaining cap)
- Torque wrench / torch spanner (specific to torch model)
- Lint-free wipes & 99% Isopropyl alcohol
- Magnifying inspection glass (5x-10x magnification)
- Digital pressure gauge (0-150 psi range)
- ServiceGrid mobile app or hardcopy PM log sheet
