Purpose
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized process for conducting a facility pest control exclusion audit and sealing gaps that could permit pest entry, thereby reducing infestation risk and maintaining sanitary conditions.
Scope
This procedure applies to all production, storage, and utility areas of the facility, including exterior walls, doors, windows, vents, utility penetrations, and roof perimeters. It does not cover interior pest monitoring devices or chemical applications.
Safety Precautions
- Lock out/tag out any powered equipment near work areas before sealing gaps. Verify zero energy state if using electric sealant dispensers.
- Wear nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and N95 respirator when handling spray foam or solvent-based sealants. Use hearing protection if using impact tools.
- Ventilate enclosed spaces when using adhesives. Ensure adequate fresh air exchange during and after application.

Procedure: Step-by-Step

Prepare the work area: Remove debris and ensure the area is dry. Post warning signs if sealing near active production lines.

Conduct exterior perimeter walkdown: Inspect foundation walls, door thresholds, loading dock seals, expansion joints, and utility penetrations. Document all gaps > 1/4 inch.

Conduct interior gap audit: Check pipe chases, conduit entries, floor-wall junctions, ceiling tiles, and HVAC duct penetrations. Use flashlight to identify hidden gaps.

Classify gaps by size: < 1/4" use silicone caulk; 1/4" to 1" use spray foam; > 1" use steel wool or copper mesh plus foam.

Seal gaps using appropriate material: For small gaps, apply caulking bead smoothly. For medium gaps, spray foam, allow to cure, trim excess. For large gaps, pack mesh then seal with foam.

Inspect and test: After curing, inspect sealed areas for voids. Perform a light test from the opposite side if possible.

Document: Record location, gap dimensions, material used, and date on the pest control audit log. Attach photos.
