Purpose

The finishing material filtration cone test verifies that the in-line filter media is not clogged, torn, or otherwise compromised. By measuring pressure drop across the cone at a standardized flow rate, operators can determine if the filter needs replacement before it negatively affects spray quality, colour consistency, or film thickness. This PM also detects early signs of system contamination.

Scope

This procedure applies to all finishing material recirculation and supply systems equipped with cone-type bag or mesh filters rated for 150 psi or higher. It covers both single-cartridge and dual-cone assemblies. Operatives in paint prep, finishing, and maintenance departments shall perform this test at monthly intervals or whenever finish quality degrades.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the pump and close all isolation valves before opening the filter housing. Verify zero pressure on the gauge as per zero‑energy state verification.
  • PPEWear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile), splash goggles, and a fluid-resistant apron. Finishing materials may contain solvents, isocyanates, or pigments that cause skin/eye irritation.
  • HOTAllow the system to cool if pumping heated material (e.g., oven‑cure paints). Surface temperature of the cone housing may exceed 60 °C.
  • CHEMDispose of used filters and any spilled material in accordance with local environmental regulations (WHMIS/GHS). Do not drain into sanitary sewer.

  • Calibrated pressure gauge (0–100 psi, accuracy ±1%)
  • In-line flowmeter (0–20 GPM) or graduated bucket + stopwatch
  • Stopwatch or industrial timer
  • Adjustable wrench (10″) and socket set
  • Teflon tape and penetrating oil
  • Replacement filter cone (same micron rating as original)
  • Sample collection container (1 L clean, dry)
  • Data log sheet or digital CMMS (ServiceGrid)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout — Isolate the pump electrically and mechanically. Close the inlet and outlet isolation valves. Attach a lock and tag to the pump disconnect switch. Bleed residual pressure by opening the vent port until flow stops.
2 Remove existing cone — Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the housing clamp or bolts. Carefully lift the cone retaining ring. Remove the used filter cone and place it in a labelled waste bag. Inspect the housing interior for sediment or corrosion.
3 Install test cone — Lubricate the new cone’s gasket with compatible fluid. Insert the cone into the housing ensuring it seats fully. Reinstall the retaining ring and torque clamp bolts to manufacturer specification (typically 20–25 ft-lb).
4 Purge air — Slightly open the outlet isolation valve, then crack the inlet valve. With the vent port open, allow material to flow until a steady stream exits without sputtering. Close the vent port.
5 Establish test flow — Open the inlet valve fully and adjust the pump VFD or bypass valve to achieve a steady 10 GPM on the flowmeter. Let the system stabilize for 30 seconds.
6 Record data — Read and record inlet pressure (P1) and outlet pressure (P2) every 60 seconds for 5 minutes. Calculate pressure differential: ΔP = P1 – P2. Note any fluctuations. Collect a 1 L sample from the outlet for visual inspection — look for particles, colour shift, or foam.
7 Evaluate results — If ΔP exceeds 15 psi or flow drops below 8 GPM at any point, replace the filter immediately. If the sample shows visible contamination, schedule an unscheduled media change and investigate upstream sources. Log all readings into ServiceGrid or your log sheet.
8 Restore system — Close valves, remove the test cone (if not a permanent replacement), install the service cone per manufacturer instructions. Remove LOTO, restore power, and verify normal operation. Complete the PM record with date, technician, and delta-P trend.
