Purpose

Establish a repeatable, safe and efficient process for setting up a hand tool sharpening station and maintaining chisel and plane blade cutting edges. This SOP ensures consistent edge geometry (bevel angle, flat back, micro-bevel) while minimizing material loss, heat damage, and operator risk.

Scope

This procedure applies to all hand tool sharpening activities performed in the woodworking and joinery department. It covers standard bevel-edged chisels (1/4" to 2" widths) and bench plane blades (up to 3" wide) using water stones (400–6000 grit), diamond flattening stones, bench grinders equipped with a fine grinding wheel, and leather strops. It excludes carving tools, gouges, and special-shape edge tools.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the bench grinder before changing wheels or performing any maintenance. Verify wheel guard and tool rest are secured.
  • PPEWear impact-resistant safety glasses at all times. Use hearing protection when grinding. Wear a dust mask when dry-grinding or dressing wheels.
  • BURNAvoid overheating edges on the grinder — dip blade in water every 2 seconds. Do not force the blade; let the wheel do the work.
  • SLIPKeep water stone area dry underfoot. Wipe up spills immediately. Use a non-slip mat near the station.
  • CHEMApply rust inhibitor only in a well-ventilated area. Wear nitrile gloves when handling honing compounds or solvents.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Water stones: 400 grit (coarse), 1000 grit (medium), 6000 grit (fine)
  • Diamond flattening stone or lapping plate
  • Honing guide (e.g., Veritas Mk.II or Eclipse style)
  • Bench grinder with fine-grit wheel (80–120 grit, e.g., CBN wheel preferred)
  • Diamond wheel dresser (for glazed wheels)
  • Leather strop with green honing compound (chromium oxide)
  • Sharpie marker (for bevel tracking)
  • Digital caliper or small square (for angle and flatness check)
  • Water tray, spray bottle, synthetic cork or rubbing stone
  • Rust inhibitor (e.g., Boeshield T-9 or camellia oil)
  • Non-slip mat, clean rags, safety equipment

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare the sharpening station: Clean and level a dedicated bench. Position water tray and soak stones (400, 1000, 6000) in clean water for 10–15 minutes. Mount the bench grinder securely if sharpening or repairing nicks. Verify tool rest gap ≤ 1/16" from wheel and spark guard is functional.
2 Inspect chisel or plane blade. Note any nicks, chips, or uneven wear. Remove nicks using the bench grinder with light (2–3 second) passes; dip blade in water after each pass. For minor damage, use a coarse diamond stone or 400-grit water stone.
3 Mark the bevel face with a Sharpie. This allows visual confirmation that the entire bevel is being abraded evenly during the first grit.
4 Flatten the back of the blade: Place the back flat on 1000-grit water stone. Apply even, moderate pressure and stroke lengthwise (stone-long direction) 10–15 times. Check for uniform scratch pattern. Repeat on 6000-grit until the back achieves a near-mirror finish.
5 Set the honing guide to the target bevel angle: 25° for chisels, 30° for plane blades. Secure the blade in the honing guide, making sure the bevel is parallel to the guide’s registration edge.
6 Rough grinding on 400-grit: Place the guide on the soaked stone, apply light/medium pressure, and push-pull the full length of the stone. Continue until the Sharpie mark is completely removed and a uniform burr appears on the back. Keep the stone wet.
7 Progress to 1000-grit: Clean blade and guide. Repeat the push-pull strokes with lighter pressure. 20–30 strokes is typical. The burr should be finer and consistent. Wipe blade and check visually with a magnifier.
8 Finish on 6000-grit: Use very light pressure—just enough to maintain contact. 10–15 strokes. The burr should be almost invisible. At this point, the bevel face should have a hazy mirror finish.
9 Create a micro-bevel: Increase the honing guide angle by 2–3° (do not re-clamp—simply tilt the guide). Make 3–5 light strokes on the 6000-grit stone only. This small secondary bevel strengthens the edge and reduces stropping time.
10 Strop the blade: Apply green compound to leather strop. Hold the blade bevel side down, edge trailing (pull rather than push). Do 10–15 strokes. Flip over and strop the back flat (2–3 light strokes) to remove any remaining burr.
11 Test sharpness: Attempt to slice a single sheet of paper or pare a thin piece of end-grain wood (e.g., poplar). The edge should cut cleanly with minimal resistance. If it tears or skips, repeat steps 6–10.
12 Station maintenance: Rinse all water stones under running water and rub with a synthetic cork or nagura stone to remove metal particles. Let stones dry flat. Dress the bench grinder wheel with a diamond dresser if glazed. Apply rust inhibitor to blade surfaces. Wipe down the station and ensure water tray is emptied and dried.
