Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to inspect, clean, lubricate, and functionally test the rotary valve on an industrial dust collector. Performing this PM quarterly (every 3 months) prevents abrasive dust erosion, bearing failure, and seal leaks that could lead to fugitive emissions and unplanned downtime.

Scope

This procedure applies to all rotary valve assemblies (chain‑driven, belt‑driven, or direct‑drive) installed on dust collectors, bin vents, and pneumatic conveying systems. It covers electrical isolation, mechanical inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and post‑maintenance verification. It does not cover complete teardown or rotor replacement, which require a separate overhaul SOP.

  • LOTOAlways perform lockout/tagout on the dust collector motor disconnect and any remote start circuits. Verify zero energy before opening access panels.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, hearing protection (if noise >85 dBA), cut‑resistant gloves, and steel‑toed boots. Use a N95 respirator if silica or other hazardous dust is present.

  • High‑temperature lithium‑based grease (NLGI #2, e.g., Mobilux EP 2)
  • Synthetic lubricating oil (ISO VG 220, e.g., Mobil SHC 630 for chain drives)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.001–0.020 in / 0.025–0.50 mm)
  • Hex‑key (Allen) set and combination wrench set (metric and SAE)
  • Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
  • Torque wrench (1/2‑inch drive, 0–150 ft·lbs)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). Obtain a LOTO permit from the shift supervisor. Isolate the dust collector motor by opening the local disconnect switch or circuit breaker. Apply your personal padlock and a red DO NOT OPERATE tag. Test for zero energy: press the local Start button (motor must not run). Lock the group lockbox if multiple workers are involved.
2 Access the rotary valve. Remove any guarding, access panels, or inspection doors that cover the rotary valve housing. Use a hex key or socket wrench to release fasteners; keep them in the parts tray. If the valve is located inside a hopper, ensure the hopper is empty and ventilated.
3 Initial visual inspection. Use the flashlight and mirror to examine the rotor blades and housing bore. Look for:
- Heavy dust build‑up that could cause jamming
- Scoring, pitting, or wear on blade tips
- Worn or missing end‑wear strips (if applicable)
- Signs of moisture or corrosion.
4 Measure blade‑to‑bore clearance. Insert a feeler gauge between the rotor blade tip and the housing bore at three points (inlet side, middle, outlet side). Record the largest clearance. Acceptable: ≤ 0.015 in (0.38 mm). If clearance exceeds 0.020 in (0.50 mm), schedule rotor replacement before next PM cycle.
5 Clean the valve interior. Using a plastic scraper and lint‑free rags, remove all dust and residue from the rotor blades, housing walls, and end flanges. Apply mild degreaser for stubborn deposits. Do not use abrasive pads or metal scrapers that could damage the surfaces.
6 Lubricate bearings and seals. Locate the grease fittings on the bearing housings (usually two per bearing). Wipe fittings clean, then pump 2–3 shots of high‑temperature lithium grease. Spin the rotor by hand (if accessible) to distribute grease. Do not over‑grease; excess can cause bearing overheating.
7 Inspect and lubricate drive system. For chain drives: check chain tension (should deflect about 1/2 in at mid‑span). Apply synthetic oil to chain links while rotating slowly. For belt drives: check tension (belt should deflect approximately 1/64 in per inch of span). For direct drives: inspect coupling rubber elements for cracks; replace if needed.
8 Reassemble access covers. Install all panels and guards. Tighten fasteners in a cross‑pattern to the torque specified in the equipment manual (typically 25–35 ft·lbs for M8 bolts). Use a torque wrench. Re‑attach any safety interlocks.
9 Remove LOTO and restart. Remove all personal padlocks and tags. Close the disconnect switch. Start the dust collector. Listen for abnormal scraping, squealing, or knocking. Let the valve run for 2 minutes with no material flow to verify smooth operation.
10 Perform operational verification. Using the non‑contact tachometer, measure the rotary valve shaft RPM. Compare to the manufacturer specification (typical range 15–45 RPM). Record the RPM. Check for vibration (if > 0.5 in/s on bearing housings, investigate further). Verify that no dust leaks from shaft seals or the housing joint.
11 Document and report. Complete the PM log: date, technician name, measured clearances, RPM, grease used, any anomalies noted. Report any excessive wear, seal failures, or clearance exceedances to the maintenance supervisor. File the log in the CMMS or maintenance binder.
