This document defines the standard procedure for replacing the drive belt and lubricating the motor bearings on an industrial restroom exhaust fan. Proper execution ensures air quality, reduces unplanned downtime, and extends fan service life.
To provide a repeatable, safe, and efficient method for replacing the drive belt and lubricating the motor bearings of a belt‑driven restroom exhaust fan. Adherence to this procedure reduces vibration, prevents premature bearing failure, and maintains ventilation capacity. Proper belt tension and alignment also minimize energy waste and noise.
This SOP applies to all belt‑driven restroom exhaust fans rated ≤ 3 HP, single‑ or three‑phase, installed in commercial, institutional, or industrial washrooms. It covers V‑belt and notched‑belt types. Direct‑drive fans, variable‑frequency drive (VFD) retrofits, and units with sealed (non‑greasable) bearings are excluded and require separate procedure references.
- Complete lockout/tagout of the fan disconnect switch. Verify zero energy with a voltage tester if applicable. Do not rely on wall switches alone.
- Wear safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, and hearing protection. Use a dust mask if debris is present inside the housing.
- Secure the fan wheel from rotation with a C‑clamp or locking pin before reaching into the housing. The blade can rotate due to gravity or residual airflow.
- Avoid skin contact with grease. Use a clean rag to wipe fittings. Dispose of rags and grease according to site waste management policy.
