Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to define the standard method for verifying the geometric squareness of laminate panels immediately after pressing. Proper squareness is critical for tight glue joints, seamless edge banding, and dimensional stability during cabinet assembly. Adherence to this SOP ensures all panels fall within the 0.015" per foot diagonal tolerance band specified by NEMA LD-3 before proceeding to downstream operations.

Scope

Applies to all high-pressure laminate (HPL), phenolic, and composite panels pressed on the Wemhöner and Italpresse hydraulic press lines in Building A. This procedure covers panels ranging from 0.75" to 1.5" thickness and up to 5' x 12' in dimension. It does not cover post-formed countertops, roll-laminated components, or panels requiring straight-line ripping prior to squaring.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Ensure press hydraulics and feed conveyors are locked out before clearing any jam or adjusting inspection tables.
  • PPECut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4) and safety glasses are mandatory when handling raw laminate edges to prevent sliver injuries. Full face shield recommended when measuring large panels overhead.
  • ERGOTwo-person lift team required for panels exceeding 80 lbs or 96" in length. Use panel carts with vertical racking—do not lean panels against walls or machinery.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Calibrated Steel Framing Square (24" x 18", NIST traceable)
  • Feeler Gauge Set (0.001" – 0.040")
  • Honing Stone or fine file (for deburring reference edges)
  • Panel Gauge or Digital Caliper (0.001" resolution)
  • Steel Tape Measure (25ft / 7.5m with 1/8" gradations)
  • Pencil (white for dark panels, black for light) and inspection log sheet / ServiceGrid mobile device

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Reference Edge Confirmation: Using the panel gauge, verify the long reference edge is straight within 0.005" total deviation across its length. De-burr any raised fibers with a honing stone. Mark the accepted edge with a continuous pencil line for operator reference.
2 Squareness Check Setup: Place the 24" leg of the calibrated framing square firmly against the reference long edge, ensuring full contact surface engagement. The 18" leg extends perpendicularly across the panel width. Apply light even pressure to the square—do not force.
3 Gap Measurement: Using the feeler gauge set, gently probe the interface between the square's 18" leg and the panel's short edge. Record the largest gap found at both the 12" point and the 18" point (or end of the leg). Enter measurements in decimal inches.
4 Diagonal Verification (Alternate Method): Measure from opposite corners using a steel tape pulled taut over the panel face. Calculate the absolute difference between diagonal lengths. Tolerance: < 1/8" (0.125") for panels up to 8' in length. Record both diagonal lengths.
5 Mark & Disposition: If feeler gap exceeds 0.012" at 18" (NEMA LD-3 limit), mark the panel diagonally with a red "R" (Rework). Transfer to the rework station for edge trimming. If within spec, mark with a green "C" (Clear) and authorize movement to the next operation.
6 Log Results: Immediately enter the measured gap values, diagonal delta, operator ID, and disposition decision into the inspection log. If using ServiceGrid, scan the panel barcode and complete the digital "Post-Press Squareness Check" workflow.
